I know you guys probably can't totally predict this but can give a pretty good idea. I was scanning through the board and noticed that one guy had received his package back for sna and he had been rejected although it seemed his stats were well above par, are the slots all taken for right now or are new ones coming out? does anyone know?. My stats are this four years prior enlisted USMC mos 0311 Bachelors degree PoliSci 2.89 GPA taking the ASTB in January get back to you on the scores for that. Letters of rec probably professors and a previous employer. Previous military record outstanding. Physically eyesight 20/15 perfect physical health age 27. My question is this does anyone know if the slots for the new fiscal year are opening up and maybe this other person had applied toward the end of the year which was too late? I will probably not be applying until January or February also no private pilots license either. Anyones input would be greatly appreciated.

I've been religously reading posts regarding pilot slots. The only thing I can tell you is that pilot slots seemed to have slowed to a trickle. The folks at Millington seem to be out of their minds. Guys with impeccable scores are passed over, while other "less qualified" applicants are accepted. Don't know. The only thing to do is put your application in an take a chance. Just don't do it while my applicaiton is still being reviewed[}:)]. He He.

skydreama-- you didn't say if applying USMC or USN. It would seem to me for USMC PLC you'd be money if your ASTB scores were good. To go PLC you need at least two full semesters of college left. USMC doesn't seem to care about the PPL (doesn't go in the app anywhere -- at least it never did). Good PFT, Good ASTB, prior enlisted . . . OCC (no college left after next summer) might be more competitive -- depends on your recruiting district and its applicants / needs.

As for the Marines, like others will say, think long and hard before "just up and joining" the Marines.

This advice should apply to joining ANY branch!

I already served in the Marines and know what is all about I have already graduated so PLC is out. I was applying Navy because I think since I'm 27 i am to old to join the corps. Even though I have 4 years prior enlisted exp. So I know the navy will give me a waiver on the age whereas I dont beleive the corps will.

Skydreama,
Where did you get that info on the Marine Corps? It's wrong. If you are prior enlisted they subtract your time in service from your age. So, you being 27 and prior enlisted, I'm assuming with 4 years in, would actually be 23. Thus, putting you way below the max age restriction. But hey if you want to go USN that's your perogative. Just thought you should know. I would suggest talking to a USMC OSO if you're intrested in becoming a Marine officer. They can give you all the info you need about Marine officer programs.

If anything. . .the Corps is more flexible when it comes to age and age waivers. I know 5 Marines that were over the age (after correcting for prior time that some had) and got waivers. I know of two that got denied Navy (recruiters say no age waivers) and got accepted for USMC PLC-AIR. I was 28 when commissioned with no prior time.

There are some incorrect statemente here about age. For officer selection they DO NOT deduct your prior service time from the maximum age. That only applies to enlisted. They will, however, grant a waiver if you have high PFT, prior service. You need to pump the OSO to do the extra paperwork. A crying shame they make it hard for us to get back in, prior enlisted make incredible officers, Mustangs tend to understand the lifestyle and enlisted men better.

They way my OSO sounded a few years ago. . . the prior service age waiver was like automatic for up to 48 months (so 31.5 yrs at commissioning). . .could have changed now though. . . that's for the green side. .

for priors going to navy (posted by somebody here):

I've met 30 yr old Prior USMC SNA's and even a 32 yr old non-prior SNA. If anything they can more or less make their own rules as far as age goes, the more qualified you are, the more the rules bend.

If anyone is interested, I just spoke to the Houston OSO last Friday regarding current slots. He told me that he is ALREADY full for OCC aviation slots for the fiscal year. Considering that we are the middle of the 3rd month, I was impressed. PLC is right now the best avenue into a flight slot. According to him, age waivers up to 31 are rare but not impossible. DO NOT BELIEVE ANYONE who tells you that you can get a pilot slot in TBS. It does happen but it is extremely rare. You can go to TBS and be trained in a ground MOS and apply to the air program as a ground pounder. Those transitions, for qualified applicants, are not uncommon. Just for info....Frumby

He'll dazzle you with terms like "Code Red."
Any word on when they'll start processing OCC aviation applications for the next fiscal year (starting with OCC 184 in October '03)?
