I just finished a sublease from a house. I paid the girl I subleased from 500 for a security/pet deposit. Called her up and she said the landlord wants 125 of that for a cleaning lady he hired after I moved out. We did clean the house (not sparkling, but certainly not trashed). My contract says that the security deposit is only for damages, which the landlord said there were none. My questions:
1) Can the landlord charge me for cleaning, or is this considered a part of his turnover expenses (i know other landlords have said they pay for new painting between tenants)
2) The house was in no lesser condition when I left than when I took over from the tenant I was subleasing from. do I have grounds to argue splitting the cost with her?
3) if I do try to fight this, do I have a chance of getting any of my money back, or would I be getting in over my head trying to fight a landlord on a security deposit for a property in a different state. Do I risk pissing him off and him "discovering" real damages?
yes, I am cheap
