I'm sure you've all read it, but as far as surrealistic Sci-Fi, nothing beats 1984 in my mind. I loved that damn book.

well these are fiction...sort of sci-fi...but not totally

WarDay - about a limited nuclear exchange with the Soviet Union (old book written in the 80s and the war happened in 88).

Amerika - the novelization of the miniseries from '87 (has never been shown again and isnt on video) about the bloodless takeover of America by the Soviets in the late 80s...takes place about 10 years after.

I suspect i'll be the nerd on my crew. I like Maxim and Playboy just as much as the next guy, but not for the articles.

Hey, what can I say, you can always find a paperback in my flight suit pocket (or when I was an E, in the back pocket of my poopie suit!). I would rather read something, than watch TV, and sci-fi, fiction, and non-fiction help kill the time (until a particular 2P got me hooked on 24, and I purchased season 1 and 2 on DVD, and spent two days on the ready watching ALL of it. "John, you want to hit Ghengis Kahn tongiht? NO, I can't put the crack pipe that is 24 down..."). That and I can tear through a 500 page book in an afternoon Not much out there I haven't read, curious to hear any other books that I may have missed.

Seriously though, only so much PQS you can do during that 5 hour preflight before the PPC says "go away, and bother some other PPC!", got to have that fall back plan, ie either the prop stop or greasy spoon for a last minute meal, take a nap, or read a book.... You can always borrow the Maxim or other material from someone on the crew, lol.

I do have a rep as being somewhat bothersome. Some might even say "PQS Whore" but I'm okay with that.

Usually on those 5hr preflights i'm a fan of sleeping. The navy has taught me to be able to sleep anytime, anywhere. Pretty much as soon as I'm outta the seat on the flight I'm sleepy. You know the A rack is actually kinda comfortable....

I do like to try and keep awake on really long flights though, during the day. That's when I like to read on the plane - and you know NATOPS just isn't very enthralling.....guess that's why they call it the big blue sleeping pill..

Reading material...a must in any commercial cockpit...how do you think we pass the time between level off and descent?

If you haven't read Burgess's "A Clockwork Orange" you're missing out. About 100 times better than the movie. Anything by Palahniuk (Fight Club) is fantastic, almost sci-fi, I think...

Never could go for D&D growing up (especially living in Florida, head to the beach anyone?, or with a Dad who was cool and trusting enough to give his 12 year old a john boat), god help me if they would have had the computer games they have now, I had to settle for Pong, Atari and Colecovision!
