Get one of those books from Princeton Review or some other company at your local bookstore. Take the practice tests so you're familiar with the format, and do it in simulated conditions, i.e. do all 3 hours at once. The SATs are a pain in the ass because you piss away a Saturday morning, but if you're happy with your first score, at least you won't need to take it again.

Have you taken the PSAT? If so, it shouldn't be that bad. They're almost identical. At my school, we had to take the PSAT twice, and most people took the SAT twice or more to get the highest score possible. And remember, you get a 400 just for putting your name down :-P

I'll recommend ONE book: 10 Real SATs by the College Board. With that alone and studying over the summer I got a ridiculous score(in a VERY good sense-let's just say I didn't have to "steal" it). It really helps for reading comp. section which is the IMO the most...fudgy(least concrete) section of the test and for math since over 10 tests they basically cover every topic the real test has. And best of all, it should help you learn how to study for the ASTB later on...or any other standardized test for that matter.

On the other hand I remember some crap before leaving HS about them putting in an essay section into the SAT. Can't really help you out there.

Rubicon, you may want to schedule another SAT anyway. That way even if you do ridiculously well, you can take it again to score higher. If you do worst the second time, it doesn't matter. Having a "backup" exam date is a good idea, especially if you bomb the first one. But you should do fine, as long as you study and familiarize yourself with the test and question formats. That being said, after you take it in a month, if you feel you did poorly or there was a section you had trouble on, you'll know what to work on for next time.

And study your PSAT book. The PSAT (Practice SAT) and SAT are virtually identical, so it will help you out.

Registering sucks, because it's so far in advance. I remember when was in High School, I registered for the March exam, and before I even got my scores back, the registration for the May exam was approaching, so I just registered again. Remember, just because you register, doesn't mean you have to go, if you rock it the first time, you can just eat part of the registration fee by sleeping in [:)].
