We are moving to San Diego in Jan 05. We are heading out there the week before Thanksgiving to do some house hunting leave. Anyone have any leads on a Home for Rent? We need at least a 4BR/2BA home in the SD area with about 2000 sq ft.

if you don't mind commuting (about an 1-1.5hr) I know quite a few guys that found affordable houses of that size in Temecula. where I-15 and I-215 merge/split
 
I agree, it is a hike, but there are lots that do it (to NAS NI and 32nd) for the simple fact that one can still buy there
 
Just so you know, a 4-2 with 2K sq ft is going to cost you at least $2,000 a month, and that is if you get REALLY lucky with a house on the outskirts of town. If you want a drive under 45 minutes to NASNI, you will be paying closer to $3,000 a month. If you are going to be at Mirimar, you may be able to do a little better, but you may as well live in Temecula, it's not that far from Mirimar.

When I was in Florida, I had a nice 3-2 for $700 a month on 2 acres of woods. Here in SD, I have have a 1,200 sq foot apartment and it is $1,600 a month. Housing prices suck out here, there is no two ways about it. At least you will be coming in January, I hear that the BAH raise for this area is going to be significant.

The link to http://www.sdreader.com/class/rentals.html is a good one. They the best variety from all areas. Make sure that you get a map of San Diego before you start looking though, all of the different areas can be confusing if you have never been here before.
 
Thanks for all the leads. I will be at NASNI (CARGRU Staff). I spoke with the good folks at the housing center yesterday and they are re-opening the officer housing in Murphy Canyon in Jan 05 (3-2/1 car garage: 1500 sf :( ). The lady I spoke with said that Otay Lakes was a really nice area and the place is booming with lots of houses....We'll see in Nov.

Otay lakes (I think it's actually Otay Ranch), if it's where I am thinking of, is Chula Vista. Very nice, newer area. I taught in CV, and if you're going to rent in that area, just make sure your kids are going to one of the newer schools in that area- not to an older CV school. The quality of the schools in that area vary GREATLY from one to another!
 
Thanks. When we lived there before Chula Vista was commonly referred to as "Chula Juana." I'll make sure if we rent, that my kiddos get a decent school.

Yes its still called Chula Juana.But Otay Ranch area is nice and so is Bonitia.I don't know how good schools are in that area.Also check out Santee and La Mesa.
 
Good News. The Spouse & I found a really nice place in Rancho del Rey near Otay Ranch area. Thanks for all the help. I'll be in transit the week before Xmas....Plan on being in S.D. in Jan '05. Again, thanks to all that contributed....the links were invaluable!
