Not professional, and not what a U.S. pilot would be expected to do in that situation. That said, while it's proper to lodge a formal complaint/demarche/etc for the purposes of respecting standards of behavior during these interactions, it's not worth getting anyone's panties in a knot. There's a fine line between publically expecting professional interactions... and whining - particularly when it goes on in the press.
 
I heard about a mishap back in the 80s where an F-14 flew through some jet wash that flamed out its motors and caused it to go in to a flat spin. I think the NFO died trying to eject.

In all seriousness, Maverick’s career must have truly tanked if he was an O-3 in 1985 and is still only an O-5 in 2019.
 
Even Iceman got out and has a successful career as an airline pilot.
