Rogue Warrior

Who here has read Rogue Warrior by former SEAL Cdr Dick Marcinko? The guy is controversial, and one of my friends who is in the teams say his name is not in the highest regard, but I like his style.

Everybody has. Highly embellished. The average bench press on his team was 500 pounds? Shot more ammo than the entire Marine Corps? His going to jail the result of a conspiracy to put him down? Riiigght.

I've read most of his books. Alot of BS, but definitely entertaining. My mother had the chance to work with him a few times when on active duty. From what she says, his team respected him, and Big Navy hated him. Talking to other SEALs who've worked with him, I get mix opinions, from utter respect to near hatred.

Kinda lost interest in his books b/c the more he published, it seemed the more rediculous it got. That also may have been partly me maturing.

Read the first three books; I recommend the first one to folks as a fun read. Lots o' cool action and a sharp, in your face, f-you style of writing. As for the others...puh-leeze. The father of an acquaintance worked with him on one of the teams...said the teams loved him, but he gave the folks above him fits. One of those sailors you want to work for, but you don't want working for or with you 'cause he is going to do it his own damn way and you better follow along.

I remember 60 Minutes did a special on him when the first book came out.

He plays on that alot in his books. That is definitely an impression that you get of him just from reading the series.

What about Point Man by Chief Watson? I thought it was a good book and the guy is one heck of a motivational speaker.

I've got the game (RW). Awesome first person shooter! I've read several Navy Seal dime store novels and many of them have mentioned RM, none have held him in high regard.

Both Point Man and Walking Point were awesome books. Very motivational and informative about what the teams used to be like, from a plankowners perspective.

We had him come speak to the unit for a "motivational" talk. We had a female MIDN ask something about females in the SpecWar field and his response was as follows:

Chief Watson said:
If they ever let a female into the SEALs I will, at the age of 65, walk all the way to Coronado to shake her hand and watch her drop out on the first day.

It was potentially one of the funniest things I have ever heard or witnessed. Our XO ( a female NFO) had to be restrained by our CO. Priceless.

CDR Marcinko was indeed well respected by men who worked for him. He was a visionary and did much to advance the technology and culture that the Teams' benefit from today. However, his transgressions, and ultimately criminal acts somewhat tarnished his accomplishments.

What can one say about his series of novels? Historical fiction at best. But what self-respecting frogman wouldn't do his best to perpetuate the myth?

Rogue Warrior was interesting; his books were fantasy trash. That and they got kinda repetitive; I stopped after four or five.

I see he was an advisor for GI Jane and season 5 of 24. Explains a lot.
