Road to 350: What Does the US Navy Do Anyway?

From USNI, a continuation of the argument to add diesel electric submarines as it appears our industrial base is incapable of significantly increasing nuclear submarine production:

The scenario that comes to mind every time this debate rears its head again is the Falklands War, when the invasion seemed imminent the UK deployed three of its SSN's to the South Atlantic and they got there well before of any other RN assets that were deployed in response, to the invasion to include their diesel boats. Only one RN diesel sub took limited part in the war, and guess who doesn't have diesel boats any more?

A former HC-6 squadronmate is a contract sim instructor at NAS NORVA in the MH-60S - he teaches both CAT 1 pilots and new aircrew (Aircrew have a dedicated sim, who knew!!). He remarks about the political divide between the Nugget Replacement Pilots and the enlisted Aircrew is significant and worrisome.

I think there has long been a divide, at least with those willing to verbalize it. I heard plenty of talk about Clinton in the 90's from officers but quite a few of my colleagues felt otherwise, they just willing to verbalize it as much. In my last reserve unit we talked plenty about politics and while the majority leaned right quite a few did not, and we were professional about it.

During the Reagan years, whenever the President landed at El Toro, and then helo'ed to Tustin, he was greeted by several hundred cheering Marines, was a couple thousand on his first visit. For Clinton's first visit to El Toro, he was greeted on the flight line Quarter Deck by the Base XO and his wife.

As if the Marines had a choice in either case?

The discomfort WAS as strong, and people went along with the WOKE fueled changes. Many were booted over COVID shots.
For better or worse, the damage that had occurred needed a kick start reset.
How soon we forget that all the comments above were valid over the past 8 years, just change the players and the agenda.
You've missed the point. You've also demonstrated the "burn it all down because I dont like some of it" mentality that will....wait for it....preclude developing and acting upon a coherent naval (or national defense) strategy.

And you did all that in just three lines!

It's an interesting perspective to dive into. I don't mean your specific perspective, but the overall idea. I can certainly understand your stated concern as it pertains to the region of the country you live in. In the south, there's much less perceived damage. Just the military doing military stuff. 'Mericuh.

Please understand I'm not discounting the concern, but just pointing out the regional (or socio-economic) perspectives on the micro level versus the national level.

And as you pointed out, all of it is fueled by the populist messaging.
Where I live now vs where I grew up and go "home" to see family; two very different places, but I feel like I've got a pretty solid appreciation for each. The later, when thinking of the former, is very susceptible to (and hungry for) a populist appeal.

The choice was, we all voluntarily showed up for Reagan, and none showed for Clinton.
No one was ever asked "do you want to" nor told "you must."

Okay, sure. Never been the experience in my case. Either way you can find plenty of examples of Presidents welcomed enthusiastically by the troops, it is part of the job.

or not welcomed...
Exactly my point.
The troops or Os for that matter, show their likes and dislikes accordingly.
Some yay, some nay, so not sure why so many of the comments are stated as if this showmanship is a new thing.

Cheering for POTUS overall and remarks that champion the Navy should 100% be encouraged. What is wrong is that POTUS put these Sailors in a position where he wanted them to cheer for overtly partisan commentary. Cheering there is wrong, just the same as booing would have been equally wrong. Problem is no reaction could be construed as disapproval, which is an awkward spot for any service member.
