I hear they are setting this up at the entrance to the Quantico meeting…get inside and you get to keep your command.

He just can’t seem to stop thinking like a platoon commander, can he?

Wake up, go to gym, go to formation, go to armory, shoot, clean weapon, go to formation, get word, put on civvies, get drunk and hit on locals, maybe get laid, go to sleep. Wash, rinse, repeat. If you're a leader, say something that will make the Marines laugh and remember you at the safety brief. Ignore the fact that we are a very diverse military. "Men, gather round. We're warfighters. We're the sheep dogs, we're the war hounds. Anyone who ain't us are shit. You fat bodies in the mail room, you pregant women in the S-1 shop don't belong. And Chesty didn't trust a Marine who didn't have an NJP! Hardy harr harr, don't add or subtract from the population, and don't drive drunk. We'll see you Monday, killers!"

I hope every GOFO in the room reminds him that he didn't earn what they have. We had men like Mattis as SECDEF, and while he had his faults, he understands all levels of warfare at a strategic and operational level.

But instead, we get a Fox news anchor who thinks the key to winning a war is running two miles and doing some pushups and situps.

The SecDef shouldn’t be talking about anything but the defense industry and fixing procurement. I like Mad Dog, but we need to stop selecting old flag officers for SecDef (and young news readers) and get smart industrialists or finance types in that job.

This.

I'd prefer someone with the credentials of Ash Carter or Donald Rumsfeld (although I personally didn't care for the latter) than someone who is essentially appointed as a 5-star general. Furthermore, Congress really needs to tighten up waiving the 7-year requirement and I think it should go back to 10.

Mattis is a highly regarded Marine officer, but he wasn't a good SECDEF and some of his policies harmed readiness.

The problem with Hegseth isn't that he didn't ascend to become a General; it's that he has no executive leadership experience in federal government or private industry.

What makes you think someone from the financial industry is qualified for this job?
At a high enough level it’s fine. Presumably we’re talking about CEOs of very large corporations who should have experience in thinking strategically and running a very large organization.

Jamie Dimon would likely do no worse than many others who held the job. Probably wouldn’t have screwed up like Modly. And I know Mabus had a long tenure but I’m not sure he actually accomplished much with a 2 term tenure.
Current SecNav is essentially a finance guy, and i have heard decent things.
