Retaking the ASTB

Okay, so I am retaking the new ASTB as my OSO has decided against persuing a 1 pt. waiver. That being said... I have been out of school for going on 3 years and haven't had math or physics in six years. I know that I can use ARCO and the FAA's "How to Become a Pilot" for nautical and aviation information but where else do you recommend I look for LEARNING the math/physics concepts used on the exam? They seem pretty basic, I just need somewhere to review them. Also, where else can I get aviation/nautical knowledge?
 
ARCO's "Military Flight Aptitude Tests" is more or less your best bet for the type of math and such on the test. Perhaps an SAT study guide as well. It covers the basic principles fairly well. For actually learning the basics of physics and math and such, consider going to the library and picking up some algebra books or the like. Specific suggestions are hard for me to give, but there are myriad titles to assist in the basic subjetcs.

Aviation knowledge is probably best acquired by a Private Pilot License study guide at a local FBO. There are basic boating books out there as well to teach some of the rudiments of nautical knowledge. http://www.andrews.com/kysc/terms.html is a good site with basic nautical nomenclature.

The thing is, actually learning the material takes quite a while. If you are taking the test soon, you are probably more in a gouge / regurgitate mode. This means do a lot of test-like probems rather than focusing on the theory and reasoning so much (not to say you shouldn't at all though). Study the ASTB study guide that I stickied at the top of this forum, grab the ARCO book too, if only to have a practice exam available. Since you have already taken the thing once, you know what to expect, and the questions wont be markedly different. Generally retake tests challenge the same concepts, but just change the numbers around somewhat.

Math is SAT level, a good SAT prep book should cover the material (I'm partial to Barron's). The Physics is, similarly, about the level of the Physics SAT II, though primarily focused on mechanics. Browse through the book before you buy it to make sure has review material and not just practice questions.
 
mmx, the mechanical gouge link is a dead link. Do you have this info? That is definately one of my weaker areas.

Do others on here agree that the FAA's "How to Become a Pilot" is worth purchasing for the Aeronautical knowledge portion of the test?
 
Thanks, I've had that up for a month and sent it to several candidates and nobody's mentioned the dead mechanical link.

Haven't seen the "how to be a pilot", but I liked the Pilot's Handbook.
 
So can you tell me where I can get the mechanical gouge that the link goes to? Also, will the pilots handbook do the trick? The FAA's How to Be a Pilot is on sale for 75 cents on amazon so if anybody knows if its good lemme know.
