I was wondering if any of you have and any experience reloading pistol ammo. My father and I got all the dies to do it and while doing research read some stuff that said it’s a bad idea to reload. I know some one who says he does it and never has had any problems.

Depends what you're shooting. If you want plinking ammo, it makes no sense to reload something like 9mm or 5.56mm. However, if you shoot .30-06, 7mm Rem Mag, i.e. anything more expensive, reloading is great. Reloading also lets you tailor your loads to what YOU need them for.

For information on this, I would post this question on a firearms board. I recommend www.thehighroad.org

I believe they have a section specifically dealing with reloading.

The possible danger in reloading is if you don't have the slightest clue what you're doing. For example, making a .40 S&W +P. It doesn't exist in the SAAMI specs. You do that, and you can blow your pistol apart. It's happened to many people because they are stupid. So long as you follow the reloading guides and powder/pressure specifications for what you're doing, you'll be fine.

Another reason to do it, aside from cost, is enjoyment. While I would rather be out shooting than reloading, my dad loves to do it. He considers it a great way to relax after a day at the office for an hour or so instead of vegging in front of the TV. Just my two cents on why people do it....

But, you definitely need to do your research before you start playing with dies, powder, and primers. Can get ugly if you don't know what you're doing!

We reload because we enjoy it and you can save money. I don’t know if it is true on pistol ammo or not but it is on rifle ammo. Plus it is fun and interesting to use different bullets, powders, primers, and loads to see how they effect accuracy.
Thanks for the link and info. We have a lot of experience in rifle ammo reloading (mainly .270, .243, and .220 swift). We just have never done pistol and heard some horror storys.

Certain pistol cartridges are worth reloading, such as 7.62x25mm, 7.62 Nagant, etc. The ones that are a bit harder to find. I bet 357sig would be worth reloading too.

I don't reload, never have, probably never will. When I shot competitively in the Navy, several of the fellows with whom I shot did load/reload their own ammunition. I subscribed to "The Blue Press" (free) for a few years, really good information source and a good place to start for reloading material. There are others, but this is good. Give it a try ....

Dillon Precision Online No, this isn't a "girlie" magazine -- they just like to put a pretty female on the cover. Learn to live with it ..... :icon_wink
