I just finished college in San Diego, and I moved back to dreary Everett, Washington. Just started a relationship with a girl I knew back in HS. Since I plan on trying for OCS, I have this gut feeling it's not gonna work out. Just wanted to hear the GOOD, the BAD, and the UGLY that people have dealing with a relationship while out on sea tours.

Oh, and she can't follow me around from base to base because she's starting Nursing school next yr.

What are you doing buddy? LTRs are going nowhere. Listen to Leykis (100.7) in Seattle. He will steer you right.

Me? Let's see, my day consists a commute to Renton with my 2 apt roommates so we can all goto the lovely Boeing plant there, then come back and wonder why we're living the "grind" then nights of boozing it up and playing poker, then realizing we should go home early cuz we have to get up for work again. Oh yeah somewhere in there, throw in time for the gf. I hate Washington. Everytime I try to leave I end up coming back. Hell with my luck, if I get into the navy, i'll probably get Everett as a homeport.

LTR = Long Term Relationship?

I left for a yaer (to Rhode Island) while my fiancee stayed at home (Virginia) and it worked out fine. I also had severl girlfriends for whom when I left it was over. For me I just had to decide whether I wanted to marry the girl ... if not kick her to the curb, if so, long distance worked out for me.

I've got two buddies right now who's wives aren't stationed in the same state as them (all four of them in the military) and it appears to be working out fine.

In short, if you want to make it work you can, if not then don't put yourself through the aggravation.

Just my two cents ...

Good call, Varmint. If you are not serious - and I mean, SERIOUS about your relationship, you are doing each other a disservice to stay together over a long distance or time.

To dovetail off of Varmint's post, and I am sure I am going to catch heat for this (but I do not care), remember that one of your core values is COMMITMENT. If you decided to stay together, while you are gone, honor her and your commitment to each other. It will be hard, for sure, but do not buy into the "what happens at sea stays at sea" crap. Just because she doesn't find out about it (and she will) doesn't make it any less wrong.

I had a buddy when I was stationed in Hawaii who had a girlfriend/fiance in Tampa. He was there for three years (yes, three years) and remained completely faithful to her, and her to him. When us bachelors would go out and do our thing, he would often come along, but he would never stray. I made fun of him for it then, but I have nothing but respect for him now. Yes, they are still happily together.

Best advice I ever heard - don't get married until you've completed at least one sea tour...

I'll add on to that and say don't get married until you've visited Australia as well. The women love American men and if you're a pilot, that's the cherry on the cake baby :D

I married during flight school, something I thought I would never do.....ever. Still married almost 10 years later, through 3 deployments, several work-ups and many 2-3 week FCLP dets. We simply have a strong relationship that seems to grow stronger while deployed. She knows my faults (I like to party, drink, and sometimes.....flirt) but trusts me anyway. I would say though, start flight school single, see how it goes, have a great time and then think about it afterwards. I got to Pensacola single (wait was 1.5 years prior to starting API) so I had plenty of time for babes and boosing. Some of the absolute best times of my life, prior to my wife of course ;)

Is he on in NE Florida?

Brett
Sadly, not to my knowledge (At least I haven't found a station with him)

I used to live in the Bellingham, WA area, and was an avid 100.7 The Buzz radio listener. I miss the days of BJ Shea and Tom Leykis afternoons.
