Random Griz Aviation Musings

Wonder if it will outlast his term, and if the rest of the fleet will make the change.
I doubt it. He gets to take this one home once he’s out of office and I don’t think anyone will want to copy the paint job afterwards. They’re supposed to paint the new ones the same way but I wouldn’t be surprised if that gets nipped by Congress or the next admin.

I actually like the livery, but it being Trump, I predict it will catch a lot of heat. I saw an earlier shot,I don't think the wavey US flag is an improvement. It looks better ( to me ) with the static flag.

It's hard to go against Raymond Loewy / President Kennedy.

It’s “going to the Trump library.”

As a traveling exhibit, with Trump flying it to visit his buddies in Russia, DPRK, etc.

A fine photo from Naval Aviation Museum collections of a UH-1H in service with HT-18. This aircraft was during the period when the UH-34 was decommissioned and the UH-1E/TH-1L was not yet in service. A large number of Army UH-1D and H helicopters were loaned to CNATRA to fill the gap of advanced training.

And it just so happens that a major proposal to unify undergraduate helicopter pilot training was on the table at the time.

Just outside Okanagon Wa, they use it in the orchards.

Old S-55/H-19. How these are kept flying is a mystery. S-58/H-34 is common in Michigan cherry drying as well. These aircraft are often crewed by newly minted commercial Helo pilots with 300 hours. Generally regarded as time building opportunities.

I would think that H-19’s and H-34’s would be rather inefficient for cherry drying operations, but I’d love to play hooky for a few months and run away with that circus.

The Trump organization fleet included this 757. Doesn't make the new AF One look very unique.

Almost reminds me of the livery of a failed airline from the 80's....

I seriously doubt that pans out, it is a US government aircraft, and will likely end up being cannibalized for parts for the two 'full up' VC-25B's or utilized as a training bird.

Great video of AF TH-1H lifting from Anniston.

The AF quietly operates one of the best combat skills oriented helicopter pilot training programs in the world. Flying modernized TH-1H Huey II (Bell 212 dynamic components and drive train) with full digital all-weather flight deck. Combat survival skills are taught from Day 1 - in sharp contrast to the training approach of the HT's.

23rd FTS at Ft Rucker in Heritage SEA livery.

Chuck, I’ll bite like I have in the past on this type of bait. I just don’t get the ‘USAF is the best on all helo stuff’ fascination. Think you need to look beyond what is being put out in USAF land and realize a lot of amazing things are going on in RW in the other three services that would change this fascination. Those you touch base with are either blind on it or choose to ignore.

As for this aircraft, I fail to see how this the best combat skills aircraft. Does it teach hovering by osmosis? Kinda need that first to fly RW, but if so, I’m in. Fam 1 as a TERF would be awesome.

I will venture to say that the AF made a fiscal decision to fly/upgrade the avionics vice buy into a new system for the throughput of students that they need. Similar in how USCG bought wrecked 60s and rebuilt them vice buying new ones. They did a fine job with that from capability and cost.

@Griz882 @hscs fair points. Maybe not better, just different. And honestly that TH73 and its associated syllabus is pretty good.

I was just recently down at MGM and while I was refueling at the FBO a HT8 crew came in for some gas. It was a Saturday. I got a quick tour of the aircraft and lots of talk about the syllabus and the current level of intensity. Lots of use of the automation which is not a bad thing.

Other than the teething challenges that still exist with maintenance, inspection intervals and spare parts, it seems to be an incredibly successful program. With the new new Leonardo Service center, standing up a lot of problems will simply go away.

The Air Force will operate the TH-1H quite a while into the future. I don't believe there are any plans yet to divest.
