Random Griz Aviation Musings

A fine example of a late model HH-46D. This model likely depicts a station SAR aircraft when that was a thing - So Point Magu, PMRF, Whidbey, Key West, etc.

As a SAR aircraft the HH model wasn't particularly great. The doppler radar provided a rudimentary approach to a hover - being a pure analog system. But with training, it could be effective. The aircraft was at best a "rescue and recovery" platform since its search capability was limited by a lack of navigation capability beyond TACAN and ADF. The lack of an effective searchlight (Marine H-46 SAR aircraft adopted Nightsun) was limiting as well. And this aircraft existed as station SAR aircraft well before Navy adoption of NVD in the late 1990's - early 2000's.

I never saw a loud hailer that functioned and honestly can't imagine a scenario where it would be used. The assembly was heavy and really unnecessary.

1994-4 ish saw the disappearance of Navy UH-1N helos on LHA/LPH/LHD. Navy HH-46D's received NVG lighting, crews received ANVIS 6 and associated training. The doppler radar and approach system coupler received required upkeep and maintenance and all amphib deployments received an HC SAR Air Det with "all weather SAR" capability.

This is an impressive model.

Never saw an HH-46 as US Navy Station SAR. I was at PMRF from 86-89, and we had UH-3As. Our helos were SAR capable, but they were not “Station SAR” like NAS Fallon. As far as I know, PMRF never had H-46s…not sure where you surmised that info.
