Err...I'm a little confused about this.
I have yet to have an eval, so I'm not sure how they work, but aren't they written by someone else? How can you make sure they reccomend you for something?
Make it known to your chain of command that you would like to have the recommendation put in your eval. If you're a top performer, they'll be happy to put that in there. In the real world, a lot of evals get "written" by the member. It has never been my philosophy to require my sailors to do this. All I wanted was their inputs. However, evals can be time consuming and likely, not on an officer or chief's top priority. Anything that YOU can do to make the eval process easier for the chief and the divo/DH/XO/CO will score you points. So, no, you should not be required to write your own eval. However, it may be in your best interest to do so. Read the eval/fitrep instruction and get a copy of an Eval/Fitrep wirting guide (usually sold in the exchange).

Ever since I made second class I began writing my own evals and submitting those along with my brag sheet (a sheet that says basically everything that you did worth while in the past year). When I wrote the eval I would always put in the top two boxes (I forget what number they are) ,above the actual writing, the positions that I wanted. One was "Commissioning Programs" (which later turned to STA-21 after I found out about it), the other would be LPO or what ever the next position of greater responsibility was. They were always there when I got the eval back. With the one exception of my eval just prior to transfer where they put systems school instead of LPO or what ever it was that I had in there.

Cool, thanks again for all the advice guys. Getting ready to start some up some college math classes. I don't think I'll be able to get a package together for this year (having just gotten to my command, etc), so I'm going to start building it for next year.
