If you get selected for OCS, can you hold out and wait to recieve your top secret security clearance if its required of you before you go off to OCS and get commissioned? I know it can take over a year sometimes to recieve your clearance, but I dont want to already be commissioned and starting my training and invest my time and hard work into something and then not recieve my clearance.

I've read about that happening to people before for whatever reason and then they have to either get reassigned doing something else they dont want to do or they end up getting discharged. Im still young and have time to wait. Can I hold out for my clearance to go through, or do I have to go off to OCS, get commissioned, and then wait for my clearance to go through?

I just want to know if its possible to get my top secret clearance, and especially all my medical stuff OK'd and finalized if I get selected before I get commissioned. I dont want to waste the next 2 years of my life and quit my career path in the civilian world for something I might get disqualified for later on down the road once I am already commissioned and started on my training. Like some grey area in my life that could go either way with the investigator. Or fail an eye exam, like the depth perception test, whcih I hear its a real PITA and lots of people have trouble with it. Thanks in advance.......

Security clearance investigations require a lot of time and money (on the government's part). I highly doubt they'll do a TS on you before you get commissioned. You might be able to speak to someone about your medical concerns, but I'm not sure.

Other than that (like Steve said), no risk, no reward.

Basicly, No and No. If you have med concerns you can get a real good feel about any further problems by talking to your recruiter and getting consults from specialists. As to the security clearance, unless you are intel, IW or something like that you don't need a TS. It is very rare for someone to get bounced from a program because they didn't get a clearance. The EPQS (still call it that?) you submit with your findcocs is designed, in part, to identify any potential problems even before the full blown advanced clearance procedure. I have got to tell ya. Steve said it best. If you are worrying about stuff like this you have something in your past that you better some clean about, or you simply sweat too much. Either way, it is not good to bring those problems into the Navy.

Going for an SNA slot. I believe it requires a TS clearance if I am correct. Drinking is a big thing I'm worried about. Everyone I know, knows that I drank excessivly. Its something Ive struggled with internally since I was 14. Its never hindered me in my professional or social life or affected my grades or success in flight school, I was in the top 2%. Its just something I saw my father and his father do before him. My friends, students, and the instructors alcohol influence in college at the flight school didnt help either.

I've never been in trouble with the law for it once, but its been a lifestyle choice of mine since before I started high school up till recently this year. Im slowly getting away from the lifestlye and dropping friends left and right because I wont go drink with them anymore every night of the week. I dont want a DWI or DUI. Just afraid its gonna affect my chances at getting my clearance once I am in. Its just not gonna look good when they interview every single one of my friends and they all say I was the life of the party for the 8 years they've known me. Im not like that anymore since my friends recent death due to alcohol posioning, and I have placed limits on my drinking to just do it socially and in way less moderation. Just worried I wont get my clearance because they will see me as an unreliable person that drinks too much that they cant trust their secrets to. I've changed alot this year and matured even more so, but I dont think they will see it like that.

Anyone is welcome to lay into me, just dont judge me. The things I've had to endure over the years to get where I am today are unbelievable now that I look back on them. I didnt have parents like most people do, so I had to raise myself and make it on my own. I want to make a new life for myself.

Lets start with the demand not to judge you. You will be judged. That is what you are asking the Navy to do via your application for a commission. If you don't want people judging your past choices or behavior don't make an issue of it, wheather casually or by putting yourself in a position where it is an issue, ie an application for a Navy commission. Further, if you become an officer you will be expected to make certain judgements about people, their choices and abilitiy to perform. You had better get used to being judged and being a judgmental. Sounds like you may have faired well dealing with your youth. That should be a net plus so don't be so sensative about being judged. The judgment rendered may be positive.

I have heard people demand not to be judged before on AW. What am I missing? Is it a generational thing? If you are proud of your actions or can otherwise defend them, there is no need for fear of judgement. My experience is that people that demand to not be judged for their actions have good reason. They were bad or indefensable actions to begin with. You don't seem to be in that catagory so don't be so defensive.

You do not need a TS to be a Naval Aviator. You seem to making the appropriate course corrections wrt your drinking. I doubt it will be a problem as you discribed it. Good Luck.

TS definately not required for SNA

Second that.

And reply to your original post. No, you cannot get have your SSBI complete (or even begun) prior to OCS. DONCAF/OPM will not begin looking at your app until you are assigned to a billet requiring one. Now, I suppose that if you get picked up for Intel, they might run your stuff while in OCS, so that you have it ready for NIOBC.

Might be required for NA ...
true. Only needed Secret as a JO flying 60B's; however, Prowler's (and anything else dealing with ES/EP/EA/comms) will definately need TS/SCI, but that won't be needed until after flight school.
