Question for current/past STA-21 OCs

Do you continue wearing your ribbons, SW/AW, etc being an OC? And then as an officer, do you discontinue, or what's the deal?
Just some curiousity from a STA-21 hopeful for FY 07.

Yes you continue to wear everything....have you not ever seen a prior enlisted officer? And by the way, it's AW/SW. ;) Good luck...

You can only get enlisted-dolphins on boomers?

I think what he means is the second Submarine warfare pin/badge, which is only available to boomer crews (same for O and E) and has stars for their "floats"

You keep all awards earned in your Naval service throughout your service. I'm pretty certain, however, that if you are commissioned and go back to the same community, silver pins earned turn gold once you are authorized to wear gold pins. IOW, if a sailor gets silver dolphins, then goes back to the sub as an officer and qualifies for gold dolphins, he only wears gold dolphins. If a sailor with ESWQ goes SWO, then he only wears the SWO pin. If a sailor with ESWQ goes subs, then he would wear gold dolphins and silver ESWQ. If an enlisted sub sailor goes SWO, then he would wear the gold SWO pin and silver dolphins. If an AW qualified sailor goes pilot or NFO, he only wears the gold wings. I'm pretty sure that is how it works.

That is correct, if and when I get my wings I won't be able to wear AW anymore but I will still have my SW on the bottom...........where it belongs.;)

FYI, it's ESWS, not ESWQ, unless that's changed in the last 3 years that I haven't been to the fleet. Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist

I concur. The qualification is called ESWS.

As far as what is on top...it just depends what your primary platform is. If you get both pins on a carrier then ships company wears the SW/AW, and if your in a squadron then AW/SW. I remember there was a lot more information to learn to earn the ESWS pin, although the AW stuff was more fun (i.e. what is the front end of a plane called? and no, its not the nose.)
