I was studying the marine guide when I noticed that deviation is described as an error of a magnetic compass due to local magnetism. I thought that was considered variation. Isn't deviation considered an error which occurs due to disturbances from the magnetic fields produced by metals and electrical accessories within the airplane itself. I'm taking the test in four days and want to make sure I get it right. Does anyone agree or disagree?

Deviation= what you said--nearby metals, tools, etc. in immediate environment.

Variation= variation in degrees between true north and magnetic north.
