Putting in my package for PLC

I'm putting in my package to my OSO this year... was wondering how competetive I will be... you all have been through this process so any advice would be helpful.

I am currently an enlisted Marine reservist, I have good PRO/CON marks and around a 267 PFT. I also have my Private Pilot's license. I'm working on a B.A. in History... My downside is my G.P.A. which is barely over 3.0...

I haven't taken the ASTB yet but given that I do decent what do you think my chances are of landing a contract to be an aviator?

I've been flying since age 16 and love it death... would love nothing more than a chance at flying aircraft in the Marines.... I'm a Marine first, aviator second... I'd be satisfied with any airframe.

I live up in NY, right outside of Manhattan, but my SQ is in NJ. It is the Schirra Composite SQ. I love it. The kids are awesome, even though most of them are gung -ho Chair Force. Its insightfor for someone like me with no prior military experience. Tought me drill, land nav, etc. Good stuff.

I was with March Air Reserve Base Composite Squadron 45 for four years... got my Mitchell and learned alot of good stuff as well... good experience...Have you taken the ASTB yet... if so what was it like?

Good pros and cons, you got it! So I'm also taking it you got a good endorsement from your CO or I&I OIC?

What else have you got going for you? Sports? Volunteer work?

As far as other stuff no sports but I have done alot of volunteer work with Civil Air Patrol, Junior ROTC, and the State Police.

ASTB isnt too bad, just requires some studying if you are new to aviation and nautical terms. It also takes some refreshing in basic physics and math. Easy stuff, just have to know it so you can answer fast. Check out the gouge on this site. Check out the ARCO book too.

Its not the aviation knowledge that worries me... I've been flying longer than I've been driving a vehicle... its the Math and Physics thats going to require me to study my little butt off... so I plan to use the gouge and the ARCO book... I've heard combining the two is quite useful. Thanks.

Yeah, the math and physics are just annoying. Its really easy, but when I took it, I hadnt looked at a math or science book in 6/7 years. Just cram for 2 days, youll be straight.

Be a hard charger (not a kiss ass), keep doing your job (and damn well), stay out of trouble and let your fellow Marines, NCOICs and OICs know you like being a Marine and want to keep on moving up!

Bebop, reaper, thanks for the advice and encouragement. I start annual training with my unit later on this month so hopefully that will give me a chance to prove myself to my NCOs in the field and under fire.

I was lucky enough to have a guided tour of VMFAT-101 down at MCAS Miramar on Wednesday... thats one thing that will keep your motivation soaring

Iron Horse Marine

Hey I just read your profile, you're an IRON HORSE MARINE, OHHRAAH!!! :icon_smil

I was an Iron Horse Marine from 1990 to 1995. My orders to the unit said "4th Light Armored Vehicle Battalion" (LAV). Then shortly after checking in, it became "4th Light Armored Infantry" (LAI). One month after I left the unit, it changed to its current designation.

So are you still in Talega? I helped move the unit to Talega in 1993.

If the unit is anything like it was in the early nineties, then you'll get a lot of good training done. When I was with the unit I was in supply. But I got to do things outside of my MOS. I got to go to the field alot, got a few helo rides in and I was even allowed to drive the LAV one time!

Hopefully the unit still does a lot of the ohraah stuff.

The 4th LAR is in Las Flores right now... but yeah alot of my buds were telling me about Talega and how they miss it. We go to the field alot so my platoon (the communications platoon) has plenty of chance to train in other fields. For annual training we are going to be doing 5-6 days of urban warfare training so I'm looking forward to that. But yeah, as far as I can tall it is an extremely motivated unit and we are going to have some great training opportunities ahead of us. Semper Fi!
