What professional Organizations or Associations should a SNA consider joining? Anything Navy specific, Pilot specific, Officer specific, and/or combination thereof? Does anyone lobby for us? Help with networking? Any worth steering clear of? I have to think their are a few that would be useful to consider, even if a little early in our careers. Any help or clarity would be appreciated.

AOPA. I'm a big fan of it, and even if you don't fly much or any general aviation, they still have a lot of resources that are helpful. The flight planning tool comes in particularly handy as it can automatically pick airways and do some other cool stuff.

I can't speak for the tailhook guys, but NHA has a nugget rate that's about half the normal rate and it's for two years.

Slightly off being a aviator but if you own a firearm or intend to definitely join the NRA. I think they have free membership for active duty.

All of the communtiy specific organizations mentioned here are good and the Naval Institute is an outstanding professional choice.

There is one other organization, MOAA - Military Officers Assoiciation of America www.moaa.org that does lobby for us (active, reserve and retired). They also sponser professional symposiums, provide networking and post military career guidance, spouse support, etc.

As an example here are some of the active duty/reserve issues MOAA is concerned about:

Military Pay Comparability

Military members' basic pay must be reasonably comparable with private sector pay scales and adjusted annually to maintain comparability with private sector pay increases.
Mismatch of Force Structure versus Mission

Increase force strengths to match increased operational requirements.
Relocation Allowances

Increase allowances to fully reimburse member expenses.
National Guard and Reserve Service Incentives

Finding the proper balance of increases in benefits for Reserve/National Guard as our greater reliance on them has increased their responsibilities.
Lowering Reserve Retirement Age

MOAA supports improving the lifetime value of the Reserve compensation and retirement system.
Military Family Support

More support is needed for families left behind during contingency operations, especially Guard and Reserve families without access to on-base support facilities.
Total Force Montgomery GI Bill

See what's being done to create a Total Force Montgomery GI Bill.
Health Care Coverage for National Guard and Reserve Servicemembers

MOAA supports more robust healthcare coverage options for National Guard and Reserve servicemembers and families. This includes ensuring continuing health care coverage for Guard and Reserve and families activated in support of counter-terror or other operations.
