Private Contractors

My friend started talking about this today and got me curious, but has anyone here worked/flown for a private contractor like Blackwater? Just wondering what kind of missions they do, I know there's stuff from basic transport to guys in Sierra Leone flying Mi-24s. Do they usually perform their own medevacs or call in the military when they get in deep shit?

I did some searching but couldn't find much, most of the stuff on the internet about them is just media flaming on their guys on the ground.

The guys flying gunships in Africa or elsewhere are not usually going to be Americans, try Ukrainians, South Africans and others. The private contractor helos that fly in Iraq in Afghanistan are not technically armed, but the crewmen fly armed (a necessity), often with heavier machine guns to provide support to their clients.

Other than that, to fly for them you are almost certainly going to have to be former military with tons of experience and a very good reputation. You gotta be part of the 'club', and if you don't know what the 'club' is, then you are out of luck.

The book "Blackwater" by Jeremy Skahill has a chapter on their air operations. The book goes way over the top flaming Eric Prince, but it is interesting. I checked it out from the library so that no more money would go into the author's pocket. Again, these private military companies are largely ex-military, and their air arms are all high-time, largely special-ops pilots.

However, the exception that proves the rule--when I was an IP, one of the reservist IPs with us was a regular Navy helo bubba who got out, flew drug eradication for DynCorp (then sarcastically called the "State Dept Air Wing") in South America, then reupped in the reserves.
