Hello, I am new here and I must say that is seems to be a great site! Okay now to the crux of my post. I curious as to whether having civilian ratings, say up to at least an instrument rating, and multi-engine turbine time will help in getting selected for a SNA slot. Or does it hurt?

Thanks,

The Jolly Roger

i know if wont hurt you in any way. i think the navy wants you to have some flight time and the Marines like it as well. but you still have to have great scores in PFT, Air test, SATs, and GPA in score because it is very competitive to get an SNA slot. so good luck.

SAT's?

I was never asked for my SAT scores. I dont believe that SAT's scores are asked for or even looked at in the process. However, you must score well on the ASTB have a good GPA and some luck as well.

Dave

Oh to answer your ? I believe that the more pluses you have on your application the better. It will def. give the selection board something to look at. So if you go up against someone with same or close GPA and ASTB score the one with flight ratings (all else being equal) would probabl get the nod.

you have to have a minimum of 1000 on your SATs or 25 on ACT or pass the asvab with i dont know what score. but that was my point

You do not have to take the ASVAB for an SNA slot. Atleast not when I did. The ASVAB is for enlisted service. If they are making you guys take it I would ask why. Is the enlisted recruiter in your area making you take it before you can see an officer recruiter? When I submitted my package, and during my process, I only took the ASTB and gave a copy of my transcripts. I would be interested to see how many others here that have gone through the process had to take the ASVAB. Maybe prior dont have to take it for some reason. Any one else have any info?

Jolly Roger, I really don't think that prior flight ratings weigh in too heavily on obtaining a flight slot. Most of the studs we get in the pipeline do not have any flight time. I do know that prior flight time can help once you are in the pipeline. Imagine being in a formula 1 race but you've never driven a regular car before. Same concept. We can teach you how to fly, but knowing the basics will make it easier for you.

. I haven't started actual lessons yet, though I have a few hours flight time with friends. I have a little stick time in a T-28, (like an hour), Bonanzas, Mooneys, and the illustrustrius Cessna 172. I have a friend who owns a T-34 Mentor II, in fact I helped him with the annual on it. It is my desire to at least have my instrument rating and if I can talk my friend into it, getting checked out in his T-34. I have also the possibilty to get some ME turbine time in a King Air 90 and possible a brand new 200. If it will help any I will do what ever it takes.

I have not contacted a recruiter as of yet. I won't graduate for at least another 2 yrs, but it will be with a double major in physics and history. My GPA is isn't that great, 2.7 (SFA doesn't have the greatest mathematics department), right now I am trying to bolster my GPA before contacting a recruiter. I have, however, started physical training with the training regimen suggested on the official OCS website. So, I can have the best physical showing, when I contact the recruiter. I have my copy of the Arco book the on the way. So I am doing the best that I can right know. I would apply now, but my GPA is too damn low. I am working hard on it though.

Should I take the ASTB ASAP or hold off until I get ready to apply? How much weight does your letters of recogmendations hold? I know I can get a letter from a former AF test pilot and an Amercian Airlines Captain, who are both good friends of mine. I also will need to have PRK before I apply. So I have to scrape up the money for that as well. Any suggestions?

i think for double majoring in physics and history your GPA is very good. i wouldnt be too ashamed of that. thats hard work. talk to your recruiter and let him know that you are interested and have the work ethic to get at least a 3.0 gpa. hey i would be happy if i majored in physics and had a 2.7. good luck
