Hi everyone!
This is my first post, so I'll introduce myself.
I'm an 18 year old portuguese boy, who has aplied to the Portuguese Air Force Academy.
I know this forum is about naval aviation, but I can't find any other to share my experience about aviation.
I'm writing, in order to share the differences between methods of our countries.
Here, in Portugal, the only way of flying in the military is applying to the Air Force ( the navy as few helos ).
There two diferent ways to get flying in the PoAF. the first, is to get contracted for a limite number of years ( you may extend your contract for a maximum of 12 years )( its very dificult to enter in the PoAF this way, since there very few slots each year. Another disadvantage is that these pilots will mainly fly helos!)
The second one is apllying to the academy, wich functions the same way there I think.)
The selection process is also diferent. To apply to the academy you have to complete High school. In the end of High school, we have what we call "National Exams". These exams are the same for all country. You are obligied to do exams to every discilpine you attended during senior year.
Continuing...to aplly to the academy its necessary to have a positive grade in the Math exam. I should say that the National Exams are dificult (last year the average was 7.5 ( 0-20 scale ).
This is everything you need to apply.
AFter this, and if you applied successfully, lots of teste and exams will be conducted by the PoAF:
1- psychothechnis tests (for about 3 days )
2-medical tests ( during 2 weeks )
3-physical tests ( 1 day)
4-Flight adaption stage ( 7 flights in a Chipmunk )
5- Military indocrination ( 2 weeks living in the academy)
Should you fail in one of the fases and you'll be excluded from the applying process.
Next monday I'll do my psychothechnis tests... so which me good luck!
another thing... we are a little country so, we only have 30 slots/year to get flying!
Any doubt...post it here!
