Portable GPS devices

I'm in the market for getting a GPS for my car and was wondering if anyone had any good or bad experiences with any particular model, and if getting a higher end one is really worth it.

Thanks in advance for the (useful) input.

Got a somewhat high end one...well not that high end but would have preferred to just get a TomTom now thinking back...

I'm a big fan of the Garmin products. I've got a 60C model which has been great. It's designed to be portable, so I would say that its only drawback is its sceen size, but Garmin makes onse that are more suited for a dash mount with bigger screen. Size matters in that dept. The Garmins are really easy to use and have a bevy of software maping packages which you can upload from your PC. Check out their website to see all the different models. I've used the 478 and it's probably what you're looking for.

I use a Garmin Streetpilot. We swap it between our cars. The new ones are better as they have a GB drive with all North American maps contained within.

I'd recommend dropping about $650 for a Garmin Streetpilot (newer version). Well worth the cost.

I have a Garmin 60cx and i'm pretty darn happy with it. Having the removable micro-SD cards is super nice. It has a ton of memory space right out of the box. Easy to use, nice screen, etc. The Garmin software is alright, expensive though. I'm not 100% sold on their Metro-Map software, it seems to give me some bizarre routing here on Whidbey. I have yet to try it in a large city. Overall though, i'd recommend the 60cx.

When I was new here in SD, my 60C was awesome for getting around town and learning where everything was. You could punch in a street addy, and it would take you right there. You could type in "Best Buy" or "In and Out" and the thing would give you a list of all of them within a 50 mile radius - good times.

You type either of those two in here and you don't get much around here :)

Going to give it a go in Seattle when next i'm there.

Up there you might try "Fat Chicks" or "Dirty Hippy." I think I used mine up there to find the Ikea.

I think that might be a whole Pacific Northwest thing... here in central Oregon I can type "Wacky Enviro in Tree" and get a list of a whole weekend's worth of entertainment when there's nothing else to do! :)

I tried typing in "clean hippies" and it crashed my GPS. Any other things I should look for?

I've had the same problem in the past too... try just typing "hippie" and/or "enviro" and mine, at least, then gave me a list of the different types of those, including "dirty", "crappy", "crazy", and maybe "clean"... not sure about that one, but if it does list it, that's a way to get around the crash.:icon_tong

Sweet, thanks. I'll give that a try! Now i just have to think of a reason to go find clean hippies (should such a creature exist).
