I am surprised no one has mentioned having a bar in their home. I built a bar in my basement a while back but never got around to putting in a keg and tap because of the expense of those keggerators. I am not sure what the use of a portable one would be practically, because like has been mentioned, ice and salt and a $5 Walmart trash works.

But if you want a keg and tap for continued use, a kegerator is a great idea, particularly considering you can adjust the temp. Too cold=flat beer over time. I.e. the over-iced keg two days later not tasting so great.

If you had a bar in your home you could use it too store easily accessible beer and it is a heck of a lot cheaper over time than buying twelve pack after twelve pack, not to mention arguably better tasting.

I voted "yes" mainly because $300 is cheap compared to what I have seen. I will agree with the above though: if I am at the beach or camping I am not going to haul around a propane tank and kegerator.

My $.02

I would vote yes if it was more expensive. Seriously dude, $300 would buy me 3 or more kegs and that's the good stuff. Enjoy your project.

For multiple kegs, you just need a really big fridge. A friend of mine turned this into a multi-level keggerator with two taps. Added bonus? It also makes its own ice and has room to store the steaks.

For example you buy a keg and take it camping in the Arizona desert for a week it would require a ton of ice to keep cool.

Just for example...
In this scenario, the real problem is being dehydrated from your constant consumption of beer during your week in the desert. I went to college in Arizona, and heavy beer drinking combined with a climate that feels like the surface of the sun tends to **** with your body chemistry severely. But at least the beer would stay cold.

Had some buddies do a similar thing in college, they rigged an old fridge so it would run on it's side, and then put the taps out the top of this fridge sitting on it's side and built a bar around it.

An old roommate made a kegerator out of a chest freezer he found in the classifieds for $40. That thing worked like a dream, except the one time when the temp control went a little nutty and froze all the water in the keg. Only problem there was that the alcohol on top of the ice still came out and still tasted like beer. That wasn't a very good night...

Only problem here being that there's always beer to drink; which seems great at first, until you put on 30lbs.

I voted no, because like others here I built my own from stuff lying around my friends garage. But thats me, not everyone has the motivation or the brains (or lack thereof) to do the same.

I just found someone who was giving away a fullsize fridge for free, then I bought the parts online for about 150 bucks i think. It basically came with the tap, faucet, CO2 tank, and all the lines fittings, and drill bits. Pretty easy to put together.
