Pilot or Core

I have a question about becoming a pilot. I was wondering if I have a better chance getting accepted to STA-21 applying directly to the pilot option or is it better to apply for the core option and becoming a pilot later? Also do you get to choose what you want to do after you get commissioned?

You have the opportunity when applying to STA 21 to select a target option and core together. Therefore, if you are not picked up for your target option, you will automatically be considered for core. Not applying for core is plain stupid in my humble opinion. Anyone applying should apply for a target and core.

In your senior year you put in what is called a service selection packet, there you request a specific designator unless you are already slated for a pilot or NFO or NUC option.

I can't respong dircetly on the current process of selection to STA-21, however I can respond as to how it was done when I applied. I was told by not only persons who had been on previous selection boards, but I also was told by my new XO that resported about 3 months after I found out I was selected that he was on the board that I was selected on, that if someone was not as compeptitive and they put pilot option they passed them over over someone who put CORE. So that is the small about of info I can share from my selection process. I put in my applicaiton in 2000, was selected and reported to NSI after a deployment in SEP of 2002, graduated and was commissioned DEC04.

Good luck and get good advice.

As an aside, putting CORE as the second option shows being an officer is more important to you than being a pilot... and that had better be true. Pilots have jobs besides flying- they have divisions to run.

I don't know, I was never a pilot, I was quoting the CDR who gave us a brief yesterday on the aviation community. Someone runs the maintenance division, right?

I don't know either, that's why I don't talk about aviators' day jobs. In reference to the maintenance, I don't know if its just a division or a whole department unto itself.

Thanks for the replies... I just have one more question - would I be selected for pilot at the time that I get accepted for STA-21 if pilot was my primary option?

All selectees are chosen at one board. The selection results are released in a NAVADMIN with the names and target options together.
