Had the pleasure of hearing him speak this past week at ICAS... telling those stories himself. What an amazing dude. The funny thing about it is.... If Mr. Hoover were in the military in this age, he would have lost his wings and otherwise been career-ruined for the things he did.

In the early 80's home for the weekend while going thru the RAG, I had occasion to help set up for some airshows and crew for some airshow performers. Two days before the show I was running some show line tape when I stopped to admire a particularly nice T-28 on static display. While standing there Bob Hoover walks by and we start to talk about the T-28, "C" vs "A", Navy vs AF, etc. He said that he would be flying some pre show FAM the next morning and I could ride with him in the Mustang. Next morning I arrived at the prescribed meeting time only to see him taxing away, WITH A FINE YOUNG LADY in the back seat!!
Next day in the airshow when he made a low pass, he clipped the prop. Fortunately there were 2 Mustangs based on the airport so they borrowed a prop for the next days show. I heard that at the appreciation banquet Hoover was presented a gag gift of a Mustang gear handle, "so he would never forget what it looks like". I understand he didn't take it too well. I have always regretted missing the chance to fly with such a legend. Under the circumstance, can't say I blame him for ditching me
