At 12 noon, January 8, Guam Time, the USS SAN FRANCISCO hits an unchartered undersea mountain while travelling at high speed about 500 ft below surface. The submarine is able to surface and head back to Guam. One critically injured sailor died January 9, while 23 other crewmen are treated for injuries by SEAL medical personnel that came aboard January 9. On its way back to Guam, the SAN FRANCISCO is escorted by USNS GYSGT FRED W. STOCKHAM (T-AK 3017) and USCGC GALVESTON ISLAND (WPB 1349). USNS KISKA (T-AE 35) as well as military aircraft stood by to assist if required.

You know I don't speak Spanish!
WOW! I had NO idea the damage was that extensive. It's a wonder more sailors didn't die. Thanks for the pics.

GOOD CHRIST! That's some extensive damage! The sonar dome looks completely wasted. That's awful.

So what now? They are going to repair it obviously... do you guys think they will do a service life overhaul on it while it is in dry dock for the repairs?

Tack on about three more zeros, and I think you might have the magic number. All I can say is thank God it wasn't a boomer. Im sure this "underwater mountain" can be found on the charts now.

Ohio Class boomers ran about $2 billion a piece when originally constructed (not including the ICMBs). Los angeles Class attacks were $900 million a pop. Also, considering a boomer is one hell of a lot more massive than a LAC attack, more momentum would have resulted in a lot more damage, and even worse; more crew dead.

And what does the AirWarrior himself think. John did you know anybody on the SF? What are your views?

I don't know if I buy that (please, no unsolicited lessons in physics), but let's all thank God nonetheless.

Good Times,

Brett

You don't have to be a rocket scientist to understand that something twice the size going the same speed would cause twice the damage. But since you don't want a physics lesson, i'll spare you the details :-D

maybe it's the bad south american beer talking, but that's FUNNY.

From now on everyone needs to address him as "AirWarrior".

John, if you end up at another squadron, you are HOSED! I can see the nametags now...

John can't talk about it.

As prior sub guy, I look at those pictures and others, and thank god that they were able to bring the boat to the surface. Truely heroic efforts on the crews part to save the ship, and to try and save the "General".

How much beer do I have to pour down your throat for you to forget this, and not call my next squadron?
