PERS-41 Online and thanks to airwarriors for having this small bit of real-estate for Surface Warfare.

First, let me pay homage to this audience. Community banter aside, I genuinely like aviators and I've learned much from those I’ve served with. From the HSL bubbas on my CRUDES tours to the many flavors of aviators I've served with on CSG and Fleet Staff duty - nearly all are great Americans. I even enjoyed the E-6 TACAMO dudes. Fortunately, I love being a SWO and I wouldn’t want to trade shoes with any of you.

As for this thread, PERS-41 is establishing a minor presence here for the benefit of those who are seeking information about Surface Warfare. We do receive a number of flight attrites into Surface Warfare each year and we want to ensure a smooth transition. Popular SWO links are listed below and we are happy to answer any general questions in this thread.

All the best –

Steve, welcome to the website, glad to have you here. I have noticed that lately (as in the last 6 months or so) PERS online presence/reach out has increased. In the case of aviation, the detailers there have been putting out info via Facebook. Policy, or individual initiative?

Once again, welcome to the site, and drop me a message if you need anything.

Thanks for the welcome! The PERS online presence is a good news story, in my opinion, of personal initiative driving policy. A few folks in PERS-4 (especially PERS-40) started some small projects out of personal initiative. The NPC PAO drove some policy changes. Then a few other divisions went big and policy is catching up to support the increased comms.

Not trying to steer this discussion away from PERS-41 but what is the best way to get the info being put out via Facebook. I assume there is a group or some kind of other affiliation...

Go login to Facebook, type in PERS-43 in the search box, and you find their "fan page"...

The Navy JAG folks learned the lesson the hard way that being on facebook is not always a good idea. When folks get pissed at you, they can put some really negative things in the public domain and you can't do a hell of a lot about it. That was fun. (Not that I am a JAG, but it was an issue that I was dealing with that blew up.)

Steve, I am right across campus in the Lassen Building. Give me a ring x6672 and we can do lunch one of these days. I know a good spot that I can virtually guarantee you have not been to. McAllister's gets old after a while.

I hate to jack this thread away from its intended purpose, but for those of us who don't "play facebook," would some of you more senior guys say that we are missing out on useful NPC info? Or, is it all information we'd find out anyways through other, more traditional means?

I would say your not missing out on much at all if your not playing facebook. The bulk of the information is in traditional methods like NAVADMINs and other important pubs like the JFTR, Navy Officer Classification Manual (NOCM) and MILPERSMAN articles. Most Junior Officers haven't learned where to look for information yet and don't feel plugged-in as much.

Those dudes are all whacky. You must be bipolar to get along with them.

No, I'm not bipolar...at least not diagnosed. :spin_125:

I have been looking for an age waiver template for OCS for a while. Do you have a template that I may use. Thanks in advance.

At least it was good to get a chuckle seeing Steve Shedd's name. Not many AirWarriors members are currently serving time in a federal prison - that's pretty exclusive club!
