Do you log your stuff in a permanently bound logbook type or will a looseleaf do? What info are you logging? Unless O'Malley does something REALLY stupid (which he may) the C&R is kinda a pain in the ass and gives that much more info on oneself.

The requirement is for a "bound" not loose-leaf log. But it's no big deal. ($2.95 @ Staples).

You just log the Manufacturer/importer, model, serial #, type, caliber – all things you should log somewhere for any weapon purchased anyway, for insurance and other purposes. Takes about 3 minutes, and is a good neat personal record, especially if you acquire many over time.

No information is given to anyone, and nobody sees the log. I doubt the ATF is ever going to come knocking to see mine. But it's good for my own purposes, along with being the law.

I have to re-check the laws, but I believe the ATF recently ammended their requirements and a loose-leaf computer print-out is acceptable.

That seems like a fantastic deal - how do you join/get the card/learn the secret handshake?

Edit: Seems like you just need a C&R FFL - looks like it costs $30. Can't seem to find the application form on the ATF Online site, though. :confused:

And for those who don't know the above pictured is a sporterized 1917 Enfield in 06, STRONG action, that's why I jumped on it.

I like Firearms As Well...

I own a couple of fun things to shoot... A Fully AUto MAC11 with SUppressor - I got for $1200.00 back in 94 - they cost about $5000 or so today - without the suppressor - plus a supressed rifle in 300 Whisper - and Supressed Glock - Owning Class III weapons isn't auch a pain - if you live in a legal Class III state. Just fill out your form 4 - pay the $200 transfer tax - wait for the BATFE (Bureau of Alcohol, TObacco, Firearms & Explosives) to bless you - and its off you go. Get caught owning a machine gun or a suppressor without the Required form 4 and it's off you go to - to the pokey for 10 years and with a $100,000 fine to go with it.
I also own the Rifleman's Rifle. A beutiful M1 Garand - it is a tack driver - and a lot of fun to shoot as well...

The C & R is a great deal.

You can order C & R guns on-line and have your friendly UPS delivery guy bring it right to your door. No going through a Type 01 FFL ( gun store) My delivery guy LOVES when I buy an 800 round case of 7.62 x 54!

When you get yours, DO NOT sign the original copy. Make a shitoad of copies and send them to places like Brownells and Midway and other internet gun sites if you buy a lot of gun accessories. They will usually give you the "dealer" discount.

Also, sign the copy you send in blue ink so the dealer you send it to knows it is just not a xerox copy. I believe the regs have recently changed to allow you to fax a copy of your C&R but don't quote me on that.

I haven't heard anyone mention the Mauser 98K. I own the yugo version (M48). I purchased mine for under $100 and its accurate out to two or three hundred yards. Depending on how new the weapon is the performance of the 8mm round is comparable to .308 and .30-06. Its a very sturdy and reliable weapon, perfect for use off the beaten path.

I love Mausers, it's action is copied by everyone today. With it's sights and you can hit a target at 300 yards you're a hell of a lot better than I. The 8mm commercial round is underloaded as is the 7mm which is the one I would prefer over the 8. Handloaded up, surplus or using expensive Norma ammo you then have something that parallels an 06.

That doesn't require any license (so others don't get confused)... but I know what you mean! My UPS guy hates when I make big ammo orders :)

They did change, a fax is allowed now. Still, don't sign the original.

Its a bit tricky hitting something at 300 yards with it, but I have managed to do so before, granted usually from a prone or supported position.
