Im going to OCS next Oct. and I'm thinking about moving out to Pcola just for the hell of it. The only three things I'm worried about are the ability to live cheaply, find a descent paying job before OCS, and finding a place to rent planes so I can keep my skills up. If any one could offer any advice I would greatly appreciate it.

Corsair17,
I'm going to OCS in November and moving down there in October, from what i've found on the internet, apts are fairly cheap. You could get a 1/1 for like 550. Not sure if that's cheap for you, but i've been living in Austin, TX and that's a hell of deal here. Check out apartments.com or apartmentguide.com for apts.

There are a bunch of apts up on N. Davis Highway that are really nice, and are expensive for the area, but relative to the rest of Florida, are competitive. They're up between Nine Mile Rd and I-10. A lot of SNA/SNFO's live up there, and it's not in the heart of the city. Of course, a lot of people like the beach too.

The FBO at PNS is really nice. They built a new building and moved a couple of years ago. I've flown in there a bunch of times both privately and in an orange and red aircraft, and they treat you well. Never rented though, so not sure how well it's priced. I do know that there are a few IP's that go over there and instruct on weekends.

I am due to report for OCS in SEP 02, and my wife and I thought it would be a good idea to move down here to familiarize ourselves with the area. The area is great and finding a decent place to rent is not bad either, but the kicker is trying to find a decent paying job while you are waiting. My wife and I had no such luck at all. In fact, we are scraping by on jobs that pay 6.50/hr and 7.50/hr and we didn't start until a moth after we moved. Not to discourage you from moving ahead of time, but try to line up work prior to moving down and make sure it's something you won't mind doing the whole time you are waiting. Ask away! Matt

Thanks for the help guys.
I only live about five hours away from Pcola so I'll be taking a roadtrip next week to check things out.

Good luck gator and thein! If you get a chance let us know how things are going for you in OCS.

Oh, I'm not going back there for a while, I've already done my time in "lovely" P'Cola. Next time I plan on being there is as an IP

"Lovely" it is! As much as I "love" Pensacola, I can't wait to get out, because that means I am making headway towards some other part in my life...like my Naval career! I just can't wait to get started! Feel free to ask away, there's no need to do it alone right? Take care

The area is cheap, and there are alot of planes to fly, but trying to find a job is impossible. It took my wife over 2 months to find a 6.50 job. just my 2 cents.

Ed, I bet your wife has a college degree also. My wife is stuck working retail with a very expensive college education. Sucks for both of us, but hey we had to take what we could get.
