From the sounds of it, there is no perticular restriction on the sidearm you carry, however is there a set of guidelines? i.e. should there be any problem with me carrying that perticular gun?

Do you mean as a CCW or in military service? Military service you must carry the issued firearm, though there are ways around that...

As a CCW, virtually every state will let you carry whatever you want, as far as handguns go. I think in Texas you can carry a machine-pistol too! (Though that'd make a tough day in court if you had to use it)

Just curious if any of yall are packin'? If so what? Also, I'm at an impass, trying to decide between 9mm and .40S&W, anyone have any thoughts on pro's and con's of the two calibers (lack of 9mm stopping power, .40 kB's, etc.)? Thanks.

Stopping power is a falacy. In the great scheme of things, most handgun cartridges are pitifully weak. It's SHOT PLACEMENT that does the job. That being said, shoot what you are comfortable with. I have both those cartridges, and I would carry a 9mm over the .40. Why? Because I can shoot the 9mm more accurately and faster than I can the .40. The reality of it is, amongst 9mm, .40, and .45, a good hollowpoint in each of them offers about equal performance. If that doesn't help matters, then just buy a SIG in .40 and get a 9mm drop-in barrel. Then you have the best of both worlds!!!

Wow... I look like a wussy now. I just bought a Walther P-22 a few weeks ago. I figured I'd learn to shoot well... cheaply. Before I get condemned.... I put over 1050 rounds down it this weekend... for the total cost of about 10 bucks.

Once I get better, I'll look into getting a nicer "whoop-ass" weapon.

Vette, you did the smart thing. LEARN to shoot first, then move up. That 1050 rounds of .22 will translate over to larger calibers VERY nicely. Those P-22s are fine weapons, and .22s are some of the best training platforms out there.

Yeah be that guy caught by some nazi-MAA on the boat or even worse by a foreign country security force in his country with a private weapon (non-issued). I've seen this happen and highly advise AGAINST finding ways to carry something of your own, if you like flying for the military, that is. If you fly into an area where you may need it, a weapon will be issued.

What he said. I have no experience with this, just the classic stories of guys packing "extra". Why give them another reason to screw with you?

Now I know.....

And knowing is half the battle.

Fly Navy: I'll try it, but I don't think that it is the round's fault. It seems as though all of the new (Post Clintonization) mags, at least on the G19, don't load the last out/first in JHP round. Something to do with a jacked up follower I'm told. Loads every last one of the FMJ fine just not that last JHP. Love the gun, I just can't stand to spend good money on a weapon only to have to "fix" it with new followers. Call me petty, but that just pisses me off.

Sure it's the follower? Do you have a weak magazine spring? You said it's a failure to feed right? If your other shots are fine, you probably aren't limp wristing. I know certain Glocks have been finicky with JHP rounds. What are you using for JHP?

Reason #897 I ditched my Glock for a USP and never looked back. Glocks are nice and all, but quality and performance-wise, can't hold a candle to HK IMO.

I like my Glock, I bought it because it was inexpensive. I also felt like I "needed" one. You know, just to have one. SIG is my favorite make by far. I'd like to pick up a USP, but they are FAR too expensive. Maybe when the US factory gets up to speed the price will drop. My next pistol is going to be a Springfield WWII-spec 1911. My next rifle is probably going to be a Enfield No4 Mk1. They got them cheap at AIM Surplus.

I never thought of myself as a hippie peace-nik, but are you guys saying that you're actually walking around carrying a pistol? I like guns fine, but it just seems like more trouble than it's worth. For instance, running out to the grocery store,"Hmmm...where will I put my piece?"

I feel the same way. I've hunted all my life, hence the 20+ rifles I have, just not a pistol guy. I bought the hi-power to carry because at the time I was working as a hunting guide for mule-deer and/or hog hunts. There were times that I had to carry some fat-ass city dudes animal off a Mountain and didn't have room for a rifle. Thats when the pistol came in handy. I only had to use it once, a fellow guide and I were pulling some Mulies off a pretty steep mountain and a sow Javalina went after my bud (pretecting her piglets) and I dropped the deer and shot her. Those things are pretty mean, I lost a good dog to them. Anyway, point is, I find no reason to carry out in town, nor do I have the desire to.

My father-in-law is a huge believer in the 'carry'. He constantly wears this leather vest with his 38 revolver, and his wife carries one in her purse. I thought he went overboard when he even carried at my sons first birthday party! You never know when a cracked up nazi is gonna raid a kids birthday party right? cmon...

I went shooting with this guy, and I tell ya, I thought I was a bad pistol shot.....

I out did you all. I inhereted my fathers gun. A glock 19 (pre brady bill) with the 15 shots, and an extra 15 shot clip, and the best part of it is he shot it like twice and cleaned it up nice (**** is mint). What the hell is wrong with the glock 33?? That is the one I want. It's a baby glock and fires .357 rounds and still manages to holds 9 shots. Stopping power, very concealable, and still holds 9 shots. That is the PERFECT handgun in my book. But that is just my two cents.

Ditto. The only time I ever carried was when I'd drive a long distance late at night or when I'd go riding by myself in the boonies. Even then, it'd just be in the vehicle thus, no need for a permit. Otherwise, I think it'd just be too much of a hassle seeing as half the businesses out there post that they don't allow firearms, in addition to the places you can't legally carry. I've got all the paperwork to get a permit, but have never been able to justify the cost.

Pfft you didn't outdo me :D 3 pre-ban 15-round MAGAZINES for the SIG, 2 pre-ban 13-round MAGAZINES for the Glock, and 10 30-round and 2 20-round M-16/AR-15 magazines for the AR-15. :icon_tong

Are those the 30.06 signs in Texas? I forget if they're even legal or not. I know if a place here in Florida posts no-firearms (outside the places you can't normally carry) it's total crap and you can just ignore it.

How much is the Texas CCL? The Florida one is pretty pricey, BUT it's recognized in virtually half the country.
