And then I can't help but wonder, why is it still assed up? It's dropped it's load already!

Having dealt with cranes (used to be in the HVAC industry), there are tell-tale signs that your crane isn't big enough, but it's a thin line. Better to pay for the bigger crane than to cut it close. Luckily, it never happened on any of my company's projects (helps to use good crane operators), but it's the stuff you read about in the safety editorial of industry mags. It's still assed up after the fact due to the shift in CG from the extended boom.
