I met him in Ankara in 2004. By far the nicest politician I have met (I actually have met quite a few).

He shook all of our hands and asked where everyone was from, one of the guys was from Texas and he asked him what high school the guy went to. Then he yelled across this huge room full of all kinds of diplomats "Hey Laura, this guy went to [whatever it was] high school!!"

Whatever my feelings on his presidency (the jury is still out on how history will view his decisions), I still think CinC is one of the few politicians I'd trust if I knew him face to face. He's the most down to earth guy I've seen on TV and in the brief instant I saw him in person at VT post 4-16. Silly on-air Mistakes, screw ups in the past, all these things don't make me think of him as an idiot, but make me think he's not that much different than the rest of us. He's not polished, he's not the smoothest, and he doesn't always have the most eloquent responses, but there are plenty of times when I've been caught saying "yea, that guy's a total a$$hole" too. Point being, if someone shoved a microscope up your butt, what would they find? I'll take genuine and principled over polished and eloquent anyday. Plus, he ain't no damn surrender monkey! Whether or not these things make him a good president, or just a good person (are these mutually exclusive nowadays?) is the question i'm willing to leave up to history.

He looks like he'd be fun as hell to go get lit with on a golf course or fishing. Can't fault a man like that.

Something tells me he's not doing much of that anymore. At least I hope not. :icon_tong

Awesome post HAL - thank you. It's a shame however that we (the american public) find this kind of behavior unique and special when in fact, it is not. I get so tired listening to people who form all of their opinions and ideas from what they "watch" on the tube. Again, great post.

A friend had sent that to me in an email a couple of days ago. You probably won't see it in the MSM. He's not quite the goofball the left makes him out to be, huh? A class act, IMHO...

I give great credit to the President for meeting with the families of those who have died in service to our country, it has been something he has been doing for quite some time on his travels across the country. A good way for him to express that he is aware of those who have made the greatest sacrifice.

I do have to note something though. The reason that this account is so rare is that as pointed out, these events are private and are not publicized at all. Whatever goes on at these meetings is between the President and the families. I have seen it noted several times that the President does this, but this is the first account I have seen of one of these meetings other than a few comments by Cindy Sheehan.

So this kind of stuff is not deliberately withheld from the public by the media, the nature of these meetings is the reason why you don't see accounts of this kind much at all. Appropriately so I believe.

Thank you for posting.

I can't imagine Gore, Kerry or Obama doing something like this...

It was a good thing he did, but how the hell do you know what any of the people you mentioned would have done? Hang out with them lately? :icon_roll
