Just out of curiosity, does anybody have any experience/advice on the "foreign languages" portion of the application form?

It says to mark excellent, good, or fair for Read, Speak, and Understand.

I assume by excellent you should be damn near a native speaker, but wtf is the line between "fair" and "good"? For that matter, at what point do I bother even putting it down at all? Am I going to have to take a foreign language proficiency test as part of the process?

I had about 6 years of Spanish, so I can read and get the gist of just about anything, but it's usually spoken so damn fast I can barely keep.

If that's your profiency, I would mark "fair". In my mind, excellent is being fluent, and good is being able to carry on a casual conversation.

Hey Big Red,

I know exactly how you feel on this... I ran into the same confusion when I filled out my application. I went to high school and college in Japan and speak Japanese "ok", although after being here in the states for a year I feel like I can barely say konichiwa now! :eek: Anyways, I put down fair for all three to show that I did have an understanding of another language but not enough to translate for the State department or anything! :icon_tong

I'm wondering if the language questions are based more for people who are going Intel than someone going into Aviation or Supply. I don't think they are going to give a test though... at least I hope not!! All I'll be able to speak now is "Qu-pi-sure-pi-ni-ku"
