Now that I have my AR-15 packaged totally finished and deer season is nearly upon us, I have turned my attention (and finances) toward my M1A. I finally gave up on Ultimak ever getting their scope mount for medium weight barrels finished, and have an ARMS # 18 on the way:

Now I have to pick some glass to put on it.

I was leaning toward Night Force...had the model all picked out and everything. Then I learned why they don't put their prices on the web page. Holy shit. $1350 is more than I am going to pay. My budget is about half that, (say $800). I would like to have a reticle that is easy to calculate bullet drop for range, and I need at least 10X magnification.

Suggestions?

You might consider giving Scott at Liberty Optics a call. He seems to be the go-to guy for a lot of the people over at Sniper's Hide.

Sounds like you might be looking for a tactical scope you can hunt with. I'll bet he may have some suggestions. He carries IOR, Leupold, Zeiss, Bushnell and others.

The only two magnified scopes I own are an ACOG and a 2x12 IOR. Otherwise I don't know much about what's out there now. The ACOGs you know about. The IOR is a hell of a piece of glass for the money and almost over built. Looks like there may be some IOR's in your price range. They don't have a steller rep for customer service but having someone like Scott in between no matter what you buy makes all the difference.

Thanks Rocketman. Scott was very helpful and really knows his shit.

I'll have my scope by Monday, and I am really looking forward to it. I decided on the Sightron SIII SS 3.5-10x44LRMD.

Wow. I'd never heard of Sightron until your post but I just googled them and they get rave reviews. It’s hard to beat a best in class optic backed by an unlimited lifetime guarantee. If you have a problem you can send your defective scope back to Sightron or go by any Sightron dealer and they hand you a new one no questions asked.

My IOR is a great scope too but it cost quite a bit more and their customer service sucks. If mine breaks I'm screwed.

The cheapest brand of scope I'd be willing to go on anything would be a Burris. Then comes Leupold, then Nightforce, then US Optics or Shmidt & Bender.

I won't touch anything else.
