Beards should still be allowable under regulation for the Navy. I think having a beard magicallyincreases your "bad-ass-ness" by something like 9 points.

I present the most Badass looking E-2 guy ever...

Check out that patch. Looks like a razorback to me. Sorry, random observation from a UofA fan.

When did they switch to the SCBAs?
Awhile ago (read: years). However, they've been phasing them in progressively. SCBA = a very good thing.

I apologize for the stupid question but what is SCBA and OBA?
Also, I totally agree with the mutton chops idea. Sounds like a smashing good time. :icon_tong :icon_lol:

Oxygen Breathing Apparatus - old system where a oxygen generating candle gave you air. Uncomfy, unweildy, and I believe if they got water in them, toxic. Steve could tell you MUCH more than I could. I've only worn one once.

The green canister slid in from the bottom and, once activated, got really, really hot. We were always warned to avoid contact with water in case there was an oily film on the water which could react with the oxygen and cause the canister to blow up. Never saw it happen, but I imagine it'd be a bummer while attached to your chest. The OBA was big, heavy, and clunky and most people hated it.

The SCBA ... much better looking, but I've never used one.

When I took the flight deck firefighting class at Mayport in 1987 they gave a demonstration of what would happen if an OBA candle were dropped into a bucket of oily water. They suspended a used candle above a bucket of water and used a release to drop it into the water from a safe distance. Man that was one hell of an explosion! Aparently they caught some moron dumping candles over the side of the Saratoga while at the pier in Mayport and arranged the demo to show why you shouldn't do it.

In boot camp we were trained on the OBA and never saw one after that. As far as I know all newer ships come out of the yards with SCBA's on them.
