OCS pay question

I have a posting in the private spouses area but thought that others might have answers on this as well...
My spouse is in OCS right now and this next check looks like it might finally be correct..now that he graduates in two weeks

Anyway, I have heard conflicting things about BAS...each time he has gotten it. I was told to hold on to it because they would take it from him. This check I saw they still gave it but they did deduct for meals. It is a little less than the BAS is. Is this standard? Do they make you pay it all back? What happens when OCS is over...do you get both BAH and BAS? I was told when he is deployed on a ship he will pay for meals then as well? Help!

Your husband will pay for meals on the ship, but you still get the officer's substinence which is about 175. The navy won't cancel the pay when he deploys, he'll just need to cut the ship's wardroom a check for the crappy food. ;-)

Not to mention that it costs more for officer's to eat than they give you for BAS, so make sure you take that into account!! It was something like $7 a day and for 30 days that ends up being $210 a month, they only give $175.23 a month for BAS. Not to mention woard room dues and such.....but there is a general attitude that officers can afford paying out more than they get.....sigh.....

And yes, after 30 days of seperation Family sep kicks in, I believe it is $225 now.

Let's not kid ourselves. That BAS was never meant to cover food. It doesn't increase with rank, nor does it go up if you have dependents, unlike BAH. What cracks me us is how you get per diem when you're TAD, abut you have to pay for that food underway.

BUT....the enlisted BAS did cover our food for a month, and would cover the cost of eating on the ship....I think my husband got $267 and change when he was enlisted.....I just think that it should be equal among all the ranks....I meen jeez....why do they think that an enlisted should get more than an officer for food or vice versa? It should be the same!

You're right, it doesn't make any sense. Then again, the Navy takes a 3 letter word (car), and turns it into a 3 letter acronym (POV) that takes longer to say. Go figure.
