ocs date assignment

They should give you a date as soon as you are accepted...it will be a portion of the paperwork that you must sign promising to show up to OCS on that date. Yes, it can change along the way, but you should at least receive a starting point when you are selected. The good thing is that it will NEVER be moved up sooner unless you specifically request it. Also, be prepared now to be rolled out to another date. We in the BDCP, especially with aviation slots, are usually the first to be pulled out of OCS dates because we're already getting paid. They want to get the other guys who aren't yet on the payroll into the system and along their way.

Not all of us "regular college grads" have had mommy and daddy (or uncle sam) paying for everything (or anything in my case) and we might not have anywhere else to go....that would be great, just show up to OCS after living in my car for a couple on months because my date got pushed back.....

I wasnt saying this is the best Idea. I know everybody wants to get there as soon as possible and starting getting paid. I am simply saying that it doesnt make since to continue to pay bdcp guys and push their dates back. I'm looking at the situation as how the DOD is always looking to cut costs by sometimes shafting its people.
Also When I said "regular college grads" this is not meant to be demeaning. I was simply lacking of any other term. Maybe I should have said NON- BDCP members . Dont take everything so personal, you will be in for a career of heartache.
Furthermore dont hold the benefits of the BDCP program against those who are in it. Its open to everybody to apply.

The thing with the BDCP is that we are only getting paid E-5 pay after graduation. The DoD would much rather pay us that than hurry up paying us O-1 pay. I know it doesn't make the most sense in the world, but then again when do they ever.
The main thing isn't about pay, though. The DoD knows that they have a surplus of officer applications right now, but they also know that this won't last forever. So, if they reject people for OCS dates who are not bound by a BDCP contract and are being paid to basically wait, they run the risk of losing many of their best applicants. Its being looked at from an opportunity cost-type standpoint...get the ones in who have no incentive right now and make the legally bound ones wait a little longer. Yeah, they have to pay us, but at least they aren't losing millions in possible losses from incompetent officers.
I hope this clears up my last...at least a little.

I don't hold anything against the people in the BDCP program. It's a great program. I tried to get into it, but unfortnuantly I'm in a major where the average GPA is a 2.1, I have the highest GPA of my class with a 2.6, and where 65 percent of the people who start the major fail out, so I didn't get it. But I'm happy, I'm in a major I love, and being in the Navy is what I have always, always wanted to do. So, I'm happy.

doesn't out time in bdcp count towards our time in service, meaning that if i join now, and go to ocs in two years, doesn't that two years count towards something as my time in the navy. (i.e. serve two years in college in the bdcp program, spend 4 years in the navy, that means 6 years total?) so, if they delay us, does our total time extend as well. i know they aren't going to extend out ocs dates forever, or even a significant enough of time to really mean anything, but.....well, does it work this way? anybody who has been delayed, how long have they delayed you? wondering what the longest amount of time someone has been extended/delayed?
For aviation, our service obligation starts when we get winged. BDCP does get time in service though. So if you're in BDCP 2 years, take 2 more to get winged, and serve 8 as an aviator then you would have a total of 12 years, but just be finishing your 8 year obligation.

I just got my OCS date a few days ago and it is scheduled 5 months after my graduation date. I do have a pilot slot and that might be why.....there are so many people to fill the few slots.
