There's only one problem with that scenario Chief. As I understand it, current law states that the U.S. Gov't would be required to destroy the weapons if they took possession of them.

Not any part of US Security Assistance policy that I've ever heard of.
 
Or you can save some money and not join. If you're still active or reserve, or a retiree you don't have to join any organization. I mailed them a copy of my Military ID & Passport. Done.
Sooooooooooo ... in order to 'save some money', you would rather NOT support your local/state shooting organizations that in turn support YOU and the 2nd Amendment?? Why not mail the CMP a copy of your Military ID & Passport and join your local affiliated club anyway to support the shooting sports ... ??? There is strength in numbers -- I say: JOIN them.

I thought about it, and went to a couple of the different websites of organizations involved. Wasn't really interested in spending money on an organization I wouldn't participate in. So, I took my money and renewed my membership in the NRA.
