I have recently heard a rumor about time to promote from O2 to O3 being shortened to 1 1/2 vice 2 years. (Actually heard the rumor in PSD) Does any one know anything about this? I haven't seen any messages to substantiate the talk.

Well, I am going on 3.5 years from commissioning (1.5 years from making JG), so that would be nice to get the pay raise early! Though it would be cool to make PPC as a JG....

I heard this once before but never looked into it.

LOL - really!?

I'm in the Coast Guard and just 3 months ago they shortened our wait from O2 to O3 from 3 years to 2 1/2 years.

They told us it was to keep pace with the other services.

So you're telling me, right now it's only 2 years between pinning on O2 to O3!? What service!?

I received my commission in MAY 99. Put on O2 in NOV 2000. Was due to get promoted NOV 2003, but now it's MAY 2003.

So you put on JG at 1 1/2 years? and then its
2 1/2 to get to LT? Sounds like that evens out.
If I am reading it right.

The Navy makes JG at 2 yrs from commissioning
date, and LT at 4 yrs.

I've actually heard the rumor of making LT at 1 1/2 years after puttting on JG, but its only
been a rumor. Can't see why they would change
it, but I would have loved to have put on LT
already!

Correct.

From Commission (Pinning on Ensign) to LTJG, it's 18 months in the Coast Guard.

From Pinning on LTJG to pinning on LT it's 30 months.

Total 48 (4 years) from Commission to LT.

Not sure why the different in time from ENS to LTJG. Although, our Academy Graduate Ensigns go straight to ships upon graduation.

4 years at the Academy then out to the "fleet" - no year long school, etc, afterwards.

Why I got you here, who all can apply for flight school in the Navy? :)

Do you have to have a degree, prior enlisted, etc?

Hey Elder

Anyone can apply for a pilot slot in the navy. I have noticed that there are all types of people in flight school that have varying degrees, history, science, etc.. You don't have to be a prior or really have any one type of background, but you do have to have a college degree. Although these days, getting into flight school seems to be a lot more difficult than when I applied. I think things changed dramatically after Sept 11th.

You think things changed dramatically after sept. 11???? I am a CFI, so I know from experience. Before 9/11, the airlines were on pace to hire the most pilots for a single year in history. Every since, they have been laying off round after round. Why would a naval aviator choose to get out when there are no airline jobs to be had? If no one is leaving, then obviously the Navy doesn't need any new pilots. In fact, my recruiter told me that for FY03 the Navy only requested 40 people for SNA and NFO combined.
