i found a post from 2000 that said if you had an nss of 55 or above, you would be guaranteed jets. is this still the policy or is it no longer applicable?

http://www.airwarriors.com/forum/showthread.php?t=104

if not, does anyone know approximately how many of each type there are in each class and what nss scores get what type? from previous posts, i understand that it is very uneven and unpredictable, but i'm not even close to pcola yet and i'm just curious.

There are no guarantees of much of anything and available slots fluctuate so much week to week that no one can predict it. Everything you hear now will have changed when you get there. There is a NSS cut off to qualify for jets but jsut because you have it does not guarantee you will get them. Just do your best and go where you are told but there is no real "bad" choice if you get winged

Just make sure you let the IP's know you want jets and your grades will reflect. Go on your cc with an IP who will hook you up. And if you really want jets and you think you have what it takes maybe you can be one of us, the few, the proud, the Marines.

The answer is no, it no longer holds any water. 52 is the Navy cutoff for jets. I've seen someone in the high 50's get them, and in the same selection people in the low 60's NOT. there are so few jet slots now, and each selection group is pooled from each of the 5 primary squadrons (plus vance + moody). It's rough. You'll have an IDEA about your scores about halfway through primary. (i.e. are you doing good in relation to your peers)

When did it change from 50?

For a long time, if you weren't in the 60s, you had no chance. I don't know if it is still like that, but I haven't seen any new Navy guys report to Meridian, so...

What I understand is that NSS is based on your scores as compared to the 50 students that selected before you. So for example, recently two guys got astronomical scores of 78 and 80 and therefore bumped a bunch of scores from in the 40s to the low 30s for selection and forced them to take a FPC and potentially get kicked out of the program.

Also, I know several Navy guys recently selected to go to Meridian, some already there waiting for a class, and one going to Kingsville. But as ENSquid said, you never know what will be avail and how well the guys you are up against scored. Also, not all squadrons will tell you your NSS until you are finished. VT-2 doesn't.

I have yet to ever see anyone get an FPC because of a low 30s NSS.

That's because a projected NSS in the middle of primary is absolutely useless.

Seems as if this whole NSS system is a huge crapshoot. To second the notion of guys who cream the program finishing with 78s and 80s in the weeks before you hurting your nss, that happened to me. I was projected near a 60 for most of the program, even up to the end of it all, and then I fell a bunch. I am a marine, so I still made out ok and got what i wanted, but guys who had lower composite scores a month later, had NSSs that were like 5 or 6 points higher than mine was. They should just freakin go back to the old system of aboves and belows. I know the jet schools do it this way still. I think this new way of NSS calculation was an air force thing, should have stayed that way. Too many guys and girls don't get their first choices because of this system, and it seems biased towards those with alot of prior flight time. They already know much of the information and a system that is designed to measure not only the ability of a student to learn to fly, but also the capacity of and speed with which a student can learn, fails. I think it definitely needs to be fixed

just curious as to whether or not anybody knows how the nss calculation difffers between squadrons? Some friends of mine selected a few weeks back and guys with lower composites had higher nss's because they were in a different squadron.

also, this should spark some great opinions. I heard from some upset buddies that a female sna who got picked up for jets had lower nss's and raw scores than several others who also wanted jets. No disrespect to her, Im sure she worked hard, but is it right to give not just females but anybody special consideration? sorry if this has already been discussed elsewhere Im new to this site

If they didn't select the same week as her, they should shut their mouths and stop their b!tching.

I was told by very reliable source that the Navy and Marine Corps have a female quota to fill, and if a female has NSS of above 50 and puts down jets as her number one choice, she has a very good chance of getting the slot (min 52 NSS for Marines).

A modest proposal for revising the pipeline selection process:
1) Aquire large quantities of fortune cookies that say "Jets", "Props", or "Helo's"
2) Pick a cookie when you get your wings.
Not only would this simplify the process, but it would also make it much more fair.
