I'm hoping one of the current OC's will catch this:
which enlisted items are an absolute must to bring to NSI?
The only component I know of that transfers right over is the dress pants (for winter blue/officer SDB). I know the shirt is supposed to as well, but I have none without rate insignia patched on.
Also, I was wondering if a reefer was issued, or if the current enlisted peacoat can be converted to a reefer. I'm not looking for conjecture, just asking if anyone knows that this was done.
Thank you very much.

etnuke,

Are you going to NSI only or BOOST as well? If you are going to just NSI, don't bring any of your enlisted uniforms, other than what you will check in with. You will not wear them at all while you are in NSI. You will wear PT gear until you get your khaki's back (1 week). They will issue you uniforms in a format similar to boot camp. The only thing I carried over was my all weather jacket (rain coat). I opted to get new items for everything else. Dtirey has a good idea, and go to the thrift store while there and stock up on extra uniforms. They gave us inspections every week in a different uniform and we had to buy chokers and the whole lot. Do not buy anything prior to going up there, other than what is provided on the list on the NSI web site. If you are going to BOOST also, let me know and I can get you in touch with an OC that just left there.

Good luck,
Cjettaf

I will be attending the 3 month BOOST, so cjettaf if you could post the information that your friend has regarding the items to bring to BOOST. I have the list from the website, but was wondering how exact is that? Thank you for your help.

I am in BOOST right now and we have needed every uniform except coveralls at one point or another. We were in whites when we got here (working working whites for the three weeks or so) then switched to utilities for a few weeks until the seasonal uniform shift to blues. Now we wear working blues everyday. We only wore the dress blues for class pictures.

As far as NSI goes, the class that just left here wore PT gear the first couple of weeks then got their khakis back from the tailors. After that they wore OC blues (working blues without rate/rank) four days a week then khakis on Fridays.

Your working blues become your OC blues, you keep the trenchcoat, accessories, etc. The uniforms you don't use, you can either give them to the thrift store on base or keep them just in case you get booted from the program down the road for whatever reason (god forbid).

Just a sidenote on the 2nd hand shop on base, it was really great, they also carry the bookbags for the BOOST/NSI crowd & since that isn't done by uniform allowance, stopping by there can help a lot, they usually set them out but sometimes hold them back for the guys that ask for them. Also, they have most of the collar devices that you'll need & tons of uniforms, we even got the sword there ($15 & it's the right size so that'll save us a lot in a couple of years!). There are also a couple of places downtown that have gently used uniform items, I think there were 3 when we were there 2 years ago.

When you say working blues do you mean winter blues (tie/ribbons) or winter working blues (no tie or ribbons) become OC blues?
Basically, OCs look like Seaman Recruits during the week?

All the ribbons and everything stay on. The only thing removed from your Johnny Cash uniform is the rank patch. Take it off (when they tell you!), put a gold anchor on each collar, BOOM, you're an OC!!!! Very exciting.
