I was told today by one of the Capt's at the Blue Angels' airshow that two SNA's selected the Osprey out of Corpus last week. Can anyone shed any light on the pipeline? The rumor is abbreviated syllabus at both South Whiting and Corpus in 57's and 44's? Any info would be appreciated.

I won't select until around March, so I'm wondering if this may be an option by then?

If it is an option, I would steer clear of the Osprey. That thing is a death trap.

I spent 3 months researching the v-22 and wrote a 50 page paper on this thing. That still makes me far from any kind of expert on this aircraft. But it sure scared the hell out of me.

The syllabus is already in place at both Corpus and Whiting. It has been for almost 5 mos now. Have not heard that anyone has selected it yet, but we were told that it was not far off. Go to your stucon office and ask to see last weeks selection sheet. THat or go to the wing and look for the sheet there.

You're researching old information. If you had any idea how many F-14s crashed in the design phase...

The Osprey is a good aircraft, it's been fixed, and it should be pretty neat.

f-14's have ejection seats.

The only thing the v-22 is gonna be "neat" for, is transport. In my opinion we could have put the billions of dollars somewhere else. C-130s are doing fine in that realm. The Osprey was originally designed to be some kinda ch-46 replacement to land in LZ's and get there quick. And I agree it will be neat if that's all the Navy/Marine corps wants it for. But in a hot LZ or any other combat situation you would be better off in the 46 probably or a Huey for that matter. Too bad if you descend too fast the v-22 flips on its back and everyone onboard dies. Oh yeah, and you can't put a friggin door gunner on the thing because you'll shoot one of your nacelles off. And if you are so unfortunate to be one of the Marines unloading in a hot LZ, everyone has to stand up and file out the back slowly, two by two just like in the 46.

And some of those F-14 crew never got out.

You're right, the V-22 won't be used for a hot LZ. It has no self defense, though I'm sure some Marine grunt will figure out how to fit it with some :)

46 = slooooooow compared to V-22.... but we're back to the problem of no self defense.

How many cold LZs do y'all land in in real life?

Yeah that really is the issue...self defense I mean. I guess it would have to be a Harrier or F-18 to escort, because a Cobra wouldn't be able to keep up while in airplane mode. It will be interesting to see how it develops, just keep me out of the cockpit. I'd rather fly the Hornet and escort.

I know there's thoughts into developing a tilt rotor gunship to replace the Cobra/escort the -22. Unfortunately, I'm guessing it's not something we'll see for a LONG while, considering the Cobras just got a major upgrade, and the huge amounts of money that would be needed.

Squid,
With the storm and various other bad weather days, instructors cancelling, etc., I'm only on FAM 7. It should pick up eventually though, so I may be done in February but I doubt it will be any sooner.

How about you, where are you now?

Hey, is the V-22 selection for Marines only? Is it on the selection card out of primary for Whiting and Corpus already?

Use your PM, this has nothing to do with the thread....
