The dude also had a TERRIBLE mustache, beat any "I'm bored on deployment, I'll grow a 'stache" I've ever seen.
Leather jacket question:
USUALLY, guys have done one of three things:
1. Having no patches or insignia other than the black 'negative' velcro rectangle for the nametag, guys have the PRs or the on-base monogram shop or whoever stamp up a standard black (or brown) leather nametag, with wings, name (as in First M. Last), then a second line with ENS or LTJG or whatever and then USN/USNR. This is removable, which is nice when you get promoted/augmented.
2. Some guys will get the shop to print up just wings and their First M. Lastname, and then sew it on.
This is fine, but I'm sure you know by now that those machine-stamped tags get really ratty and alomost illegible pretty quick. Kinda cool, kinda salty, but if you cant even read your name or see the wings...then ya buy a new one and the leather underneath gets beat to hell with all those needle pokes.
3. Get a sweet Tipsy Gipsy nametag, which is all leather, no velcro. It's a solid piece of leather with your name and wings (no rank or service) 'stamped' into it (think of a western belt, but not gay). The guy then hand paints the letters and the wings. They are AWESOME. (try a search on here for tipsy gypsy)
Personally, I just had the PR shop leather nametag velcroed on until I got my Tipsy patches. Sewing it on is just gonna beat up the jacket when you have to replace it.
