DON'T PANIC!
also Message to Garcia is bullshit often cited by shitty leaders who can't lead #ChangeMyMind
When I was taking a course for leaders we were told to evaluate “A Message for Garcia” and what it meant for the warfighter, it was a kind of hip-shot, due tomorrow kind of assignment and I always hated the basis of the story so I turned in this…

Take a message to Garcia,
Just get the damn thing there.
Of all the other detail stuff I simply do not care.
Get that message to Garcia, get moving and moving now,
Don’t brief me with your plans on the where, the when or how.

So off I set along the way, the message quite secure
I was looking for Garcia and my bravery was pure.
My first stop was the taco truck, that’s just outside the gate.
I asked there for Garcia and was told, “Senior, he’s late.
But if you mean Pedro Garcia today is his day free,
You are welcome, Senior, if you wish, to leave the message with me.”
This was not right, of this I’m sure, so I decided to go,
I turned south and shuffled off just a little more in the know.

I stopped at a bodega, just north of Miami town,
I asked there for Garcia but was met with just a frown.
“I fired that ass a day ago, he was stealing cervezas from me,
I do not know which way he went and do not care, you see.”

My God - how many Garcia’s are out there on this earth?
And how much are they added to each year by gain and birth?
This Garcia must be important, perhaps a military man,
or maybe an elderly woman with a recipe for flan?

My task it grew much harder, I traveled from east to west.
I worried my commander would think I failed his test.
Just who is this Garcia, and how am I to know,
he isn’t just some standard Bob, or ordinary Joe?

Take a message to Garcia? Sure, if you say so man.
But I’ll need a bit more info to formulate a plan
For I’m a damn good soldier and there’s one thing I know,
that knowing is half the battle, so I’ll need some more info.

The powers that be were not pleased,, but I think it ended up on a wall somewhere.

As a fresh butterbar I was given a task and when asking more questions I got the "message to Garcia" response. So myself and another ENS spent a better part of an hour trying to figure out who is this Garcia guy. Much to the amusement of my leadership. No joke.

I too really wish we could Men-in-Black mind-wipe A Message to Garcia from the military’s collective consciousness. I think the intended point isn’t bad - you won’t always have everything you’d like but strive to accomplish your mission anyway - but seems like a lot of dudes take-away is more like, you don’t need to give subordinates any guidance, assistance, or mentorship; if they fail, it’s not your fault they suck.

Hello all!

I’m a NROTC 1/C and I have been super nervous lately about service selection. I put NFO as my first choice with a 6,6,7 ASTB and 2.85 GPA in a tier three major. My actual gpa is higher but it wasn’t updated in time to submit my package. Other than that my PT is good and I passed my flight physical. Could anyone give some honest insight about how they think this compares? Thanks!
Your feelings are super normal. Let the process happen. You will do great regardless of where you ultimately end up - but coming from NROTC it's highly to get your choice of warfare specialty. Relax.

I feel like this about Clausewitz. Some great concepts in there, but it just has so much potential for misinterpretation and misuse that I think our strategic brain trust ought to adopt another text, or another approach.

I seem to have struck a nerve. But, it’s one that I agree with.

I had a DH in my first squadron who loved to yell “Message to Garcia!” at JOs when we asked basic questions (admittedly most that we could answer for ourselves). I liked working for him and we got along great off duty, but it drove me nuts how much he used that expression.
