NFO Jobs Post-USN?

I work in manufacturing, and we are constantly hiring people with military experience to run the assembly plants. Half of our current management team came from the military, inventory as follows:

(1) Army Lt. Col (Chopper Pilot) - Production Manager
(1) Army Lt. Col (Supply) - Supply Chain Manager
(1) Army Lt. Col (Rangers) - Incoming Quality Manager (good stories!!!)
(1) Marine Captain (Sniper/Scout) - Production Supervisor
(1) Navy LDCR (NFO) - Engineering Manager

There are some organizational similarities between the military and a manufacturing plant, so the people fit in a little better/faster than the average. And while not specific to Navy NFOs, the job skills acquired in the military are very adaptable to manufacturing. A quick list in no particular order:

* Ability to work in a high pressure environment (disclaimer: While no one is shooting at you, causing downtime on the line will cost you ~$1 Million/Hour and mucho ass pain)
* Ability to analyze data quickly AND make a decision based on the data
* Ability to work in a team environment
* Ability to follow process and work in a structured environment
* Ability to know when to chuck (OK, bend) the rules to get the job done
* Know when to solve the problem yourself, when to ask for help, and when to kick-it up the Chain of Command so your boss doesn't get blind sided.
* Ability to give and accept harsh/blunt criticism without taking it personal
* Ability to give and follow directions. Know how to disagree with your boss without being disrespectful, and how to fully implement a decision that you disagree with 100%.

These are skills you will never learn from a book, and they are very much in demand in the civilian job market!

Another common route (for any officer) is to get an MBA and hit up corporate America.

Besides, you'll have a much more interesting background (and way more leadership experience) than the guy who was an accountant or financial analyst for a few years.

Yup - been out here 35+ years, homeless and living under the freeway:D
That is the beauty of WIFI, you can get it under the freeway in your El Camino.

Among the ones that I have seen:

Teacher
Airline Pilot
Plumbing Salesman
Intelligence Officer
Defense Contractor
Satellite Support Engineer
Research Analyst
Realtor
Civil Servant
Manager for Building Contractor
Professor
Reserve Bum
Lawyer
Business Executive
Banker

And I am sure I am forgetting a few.
Don't forget politics and porn.

Re: Jobs for ex-NFOs (those lucky enough to get out alive!)

You forgot "Driver's License Examiner" for the on-the-road test phase.

Can't be any worse than some of the crap I had to sit through inside of 3/4 of a mile...

No need to name names...you guys know who you are...

439 traps (okay, "trips," for us in the right seat)
164 at night, including 45 in one cruise
39 hook up touch & gos (no stop = no credit)
33 bolters (didn't you hear me say "attitude?")
1 very ugly own wave-off up the right side of the ship, at night, with CAG Paddles driving (who should know better than to scare me like that).

Back in the days prior to NFO bonuses. At least most A-6 pilots had the decency to buy beer for us while on liberty. Not that it was a date or anything...

All before to my 30th birthday.

There is also the all time favorite:

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!

A guy I met before i joined up was a former A-6 B/N. He was a ski bum, his wife was a reserve marine intel officer and did something else to bring money in.

Ah, sounds too good to be true.

Not just NFOs...

Seems to me with the airlines the way they are, it's a challenge not just for NFOs, but pilots, as well, Post-USN. We're all in the same situation.

From Harvard no less......and Harvard Law Review, law clerk to a Supreme Court justice......all that kind of helps too!

He's a good dude - level-headed, and calls'em like he sees'em. Wish there were more like him around. (One of his deputies is a DIRCOM intel bubba who was in instructor at NSAWC with me and did a tour with HCS-4 in Iraq. Also a good dude.)
