NFO and Career afterwards?

Hi, i wonder if i do NFO with usmc(which is about 8yrs commitment in total), would i then be able to go to a top business school? Would i be too old? If on the other hand i do infantry or aav(4yr contract), would i have as much access to an onbase flying club so i could get a private pilot license? I mean do NFO have more fun than the ground combat arms moses? I am also very interested in travel. I dont think Hornets deploy much(unless they go to iraq or something), but do EA6P deploy or fly on long training trips?

If becoming a navigator, how do usmc, navy, and af compare? What would a navigator do on a big cargo plane during a long trip? Where do you get the most opportunity to fly private planes or otherwise get involved in aviation hobbies?

No, it's explicitly in the contract that NFO's sign that they are not allowed to attend a business school that is "top". They're only allowed to go to community colleges and they must register as senior citizens there.

Hate to tell, but unless you are willing to transform into a Flight management computer there are no navigators anymore on big cargo planes.....

USMC NFO jobs will all be on tactical jets. You will have equal access to any on base facilities including flying clubs. Check out another thread on AW about many fly clubs going away. As to free time and deployment skeds, you will have to wait for a Marine to jump in on that one. As a NFO, I'd say take the flying option and have a blast. Yes there are a few more years required, but it is well worth it. I can't imagine being too old for a grad degree afterwords. Besides, you can get you grad degree on active duty.

My recruiter put it to me this way - you can do whatever you want, but remember that the private sector will always be there. The military won't want you later, but Big Company (or Big School) doesn't care if you're 22 or 32.

Thank you for the responses! I searched more and I found that one of the differences between navy and usmc is that navy has in addition Orion. And it deploys more and to more exotic locations(something i like)? But both navy and usmc have Hornets and E6P. Can you expect to travel much cross country or on other long trips as a Hornet navigator(or you're stuck to your base completely)? If you go on a ship cruise, do you just stop 1-2 days in various ports, or you might get to stay several weeks in australia or italy?

Also, in order to compare Navigator vs other mos like Infantry or amph. assault vehicle officer, could you provide some input why flying is more fun? If you're an infantry officer at camp pendleton, do you not get access to the flying club? And in which job do you have more free time to fly or to scuba dive(let's assume when you're not deployed, how does the work day compare)? If you're a pilot or navigator, do you get any chance to use marine rubber boats or aav or take part in other infantry training exercises(perhaps while deployed on a cruise ship)?

I am a naturalized u.s. citizen and am a senior at a university(studying biology/math). I have no depth perception. I may also do a masters program next year just because it would pay me a stipend to work in a lab 9-5 and would allow me to spend more time skiing and fooling around. After reading these forums extensively, I have interest in Navy NFO mainly because of the P3 and the opportunities they get to travel/deploy to various exotic places. USMC obviously has tactical jets and it's obviously fun to train at >1mach. But I dont know which is more fun- P3 or fighters? But I also think that TBS is a positive, not negative part of usmc. And i do have interest in infantry/aav mos.

To set record straight, Marines do not deploy on Cruise Ships....that was Brits that used them during Falklands

as for P3 vs Hornets/Prowlers, i meant which is more fun as a career(or 5-10yr commitment)? Would you ever get to go to those exotic places as a Hornet NFO? When do you go home off work when you dont have any training mission or deployment?
