NEWS NFA Regulations Revoked! SBR and Suppressors for all my friends.

You read that right. @Gatordev is in heaven.

You can purchase a Short Barrelled Rifle or a Suppressor over the counter no differently than any other normal forearm, subject to state regulations of course.

And you can take an existing rifle with a 16" + barrel and slap on a short Barrelled upper receiver all. Day. Long.

Amazing. I never thought I'd see this.

For the record I haven't bought a firearm in over a year.

subject to state regulations of course.

This is still a pretty big one. The ATF in their FAQ is basically saying, "We don't know what to tell you about that...other than you still can't have them in states that ban them."

This was great news, no doubt. I just wonder what happens 2-3 years from now with a different Congress and different Executive Office.

Being a resident of the Commonwealth of KY - I do look forward to picking up a MK18 upper!

Dropping the tax to $0 effectively killed it, fair enough. Now to get these greedy jerks off their $1k pricepoint for a 5.56 can.
Have you seen what firearms cost?

Regarding the letter, I am not a lawyer, but here’s a little amateur analysis…

Color me skeptical of the ATF here- there are several statements in the letter that indicate they’re trying to find new footing to make our lives difficult. ATF has clearly laid the framework to switch enforcement back on at any time, and they have done so retroactively in the past (pistol braces, anyone?)

Furthermore, keeping the requirement for Form 20s (e.g. crossing state lines with an SBR) is still required, and the ATF is apparently setting up a method to file Form 20s for non-registered SBRs… so you can soon file your non-registered shorty with the ATF when you move between states… thereby creating a backdoor registry. Fun!

Some states explicitly outlaw items listed on the NFA, except ones that are registered with the Federal government. States will undoubtedly react to this new development, and a patchwork of legal changes may emerge.

I predict a lot of civil cases coming up- TBD where that will go.

For my part, I’m shelving plans to refile my SBRs and suppressors into a trust, since unnecessary filing with ATF seems like the riskier path for now. I have the trust set up, so I can change course later based on which way the political winds blow (left, right, left, right, etc…ugh!)

Don’t get me wrong, there is a lot of good here for those of us who enjoy shooting with a lower hearing loss/TBI risk. But the benefits could be short lived (because, politics!) This ATF letter will likely lead to a lot of confusion and overreaction from all sides of the issue.

Also, can we merge this with the Firearms thread? We already had an NFA discussion going there.

I forgot about my Glock Gen 6...probably because it's been a disappointment. But I do have my name on a wait list for a Spectre 9 at a fantastic price.

Who pays MAP/MSRP?

But seriously, someone should look at the relationship of demand and how that affects the price of goods. Supply may also play into that equation. They could even make a graphical curve about it.

Actually gets me over the line of wanting a SBR upper. Main thing that kept me from getting those was the hassle of asking the ATF when moving across state lines. Felt pointless to have to file when I have several 16+” uppers I could slap back on a lower to move.
