Greetings all - I'm returning to the forum after a lenghty hiatus. Hopefully many of the juvenile and moronic posters have been voted off the proverbial island.

For those of you who don't know me:

Name is Jack but I go by Farva

Univeristy of Florida grad - classmate of John Wickam's actually.

I'm an EA-6B Prowler pilot and an LSO

I've been flying the war-pig for over two years now and have a couple of good stories.

I hated it when I got here and now I love the area, the community's alright too. Any soon to be selecting Strike SNA's out there?

That's about it - good to be back.

hey Farva,
i wouldn't say i'm close to selection but word on the street is they'll have our class out of Kingsville in about another 40 weeks ish. i think we all predominantly want hornets (saying that without having done ACM) but would greatly appreciate any fleet stories/advice.
Thanks,
Jake

First off, change your name there Cool Hand.

As far as wanting Hornets - sure you do and so does everyone else. I wouldn't worry about ACM making or breaking you. We had E-2 guys in Meridian teaching some of the stuff - they're really just looking see if you can handle the airplane in a constantly changing enviornment. Sure its called ACM and you're trying to 'kill' the other guy, but there are lot of other learning points to take from that part of the sylabus.

A couple of quick things about Hornets: (Any actual Hornet bubbas feel free to chime in and raise the BS flag if needed)

There are actually G limited Hornets out there now. Gasp, can you believe, its not just the Prowlers anymore. I believe the problem is with the keels. Whatever the case there are now Hornets that have restrictive G limits and the west coast rag actually has taken measures to limit the speed the speed the guys can bring into the break and they have some jets that are only permitted to be flown on the more mundane - less dynamic - syllabus events.

Maintenance overall on the older block Charlie models is also becoming a big issue. I can't speak to specific issues they are having, but its getting worse as the jets get older and get more asked of them.

If I were you I would ensure that your Instrument grades were solid and that you do well at the boat. Try to weasel your way into a Super Hornet seat.

And only because I would be remiss if I didn't put at least one plug in for the Prowler: If you come fly Prowlers anytime soon, you will end up flying a SuperHornet.

First off, I'm restricted from Prowlers... so you can't sell me on em!

Ever been to LeMoore? Visited Oceana a little while ago, and wondering what its like out west. I've lived most my life on the east coast and could really go for a change in scenery, but everyone I talk to says LeMoore sucks... however everything I'm into is so close! Snow skiing, 4 wheelin, mountain biking, dirt bikes, surfing, etc... plus I was born in AZ... but is LeMoore really that bad?
Thanks

PS.. I have a ways to getting out of Advanced... but still wondering.

You got restricted from Prowlers? Any good story behind that one?

I may be one of the few people that loves Lemoore. I don't know anything about it from a military angle, so you don't have to take anything I have to say about it as truth. It's a very small town. Agricultural. It's about half an hour from Harris Ranch, which my fiance says is the best steak place ever. And about ten minutes from Hanford, which has the malls and such. It gets very hot, but if you're from Arizona, you're used to that. They are building new houses that are very inexpensive for California (175,000 ish). I don't know if there's much civilian work since it is such a small town - but it's close to Fresno (ew) which has more jobs (if there's an SO's career you need to worry about).

welcome back Jack

i was at LSO school recently & your name was brought up during class ... i was drunk at the time and can't remember what was being said though, i think it had something to do with your callsign ...

anyways, yes, the Hornet is 'limited' to 4 Gs/350 knots in the break, no BFM with fuel in the externals, D's can't BFM with externals, among some other gay ass rules pertaining to the FLE issue ... a Super Hornet squid that was in my LSO class said those rules for the legacy Hornet are carrying over to the Supers. take it for what it's worth, i suppose

I go to school relatively close to Lemoore (1.5 hours or so) and have been there many times. While I also cant give you the Military perspective because Im still in college, I can tell you a bit about the West since I was born and raised there...

Lemoore is in whats called the "Armpit" of California. The very hot, valley area of the State. Lots of agriculteral land and did I mention its really hot? Lemoore is also a small town, being about 30 minutes from the closest City (Fresno). It consists of an Air Station, an Indian Casino, and farm land. Fascinated with California's long coast line, and unending beaches full of beautiful women? Well forget it, Lemoore is nowhere near the Coast line. The good thing about Lemoore? GREAT flying weather.

You will get a good taste of the ****tier parts of California when you go to El Centro for WEPS.

Miramar on the other hand is a beautiful base, and an awesome location. Those Marines there have it good...and so did Maverick and Goose.

But you know...If I was in advanced picking between the two Hornet bases, I would put Lemoore first. I love California and this is where my family is...but thats just me.

I remember asking a newly winged Hornet driver about how hard it is to get Lemoore, and he told me its actually pretty easy because everyone else puts Oceana as their first choice. That was years ago though.

Farva,
What's the timeline for the prowler going away. is it going to be like the S-3? They just had a guy get an S-3 slot not too long ago. i've also talked to some pilots who are leaving the S-3 community because it's dying and aren't necessarily getting to fly another jet, lot of em are having to go P-3's. Shed some light on the prowler future, I'm one of the only jet students out here not restricted from them.
Thanks,
jake
